SACD sounds fine, and yes you'll hear a difference even a $500. pair of speakers. The problem I had with it was the mixing. On one album they put the Vocals in the center channel Thumbs Down It sounded awful, flat and uninvolving, like............. well like a dialogue speaker was tring to play music. Rolling Eyes On another album they put the Bass riffs from the Yes Fragile album in the center channel, simply retarded. I think DVD-A you could choose 2 channel only, of course morons at sony made SACD fully suround only.

I think that it might have sounded better it you had your speakers matched. Not going with the hey look at this little speaker that will fit under your tv. Thats why you think it sounds flat most center channel speakers don't have the bass response needed to sound right.

At this moment I am running a set of Cerwin-Vega D-3's. I am trying to find another set so I can have all three up front the same. Eventually I will upgrade to B&W's but that won't be for awhile. The Vegas may not be the best speakers but for what I listen to they do fine.

On paper it "sounds" better since most singers are in the "center". But when you saw ________ in concert; did the PA system have a center channel that only carried the singer's voice. Of course, I hate comparing live music because it rarely sounds as good, ignoring stellar live albums like Frampton Comes Alive or Ozzy's Tribute to Randy Rhoads.
Whoever put vocals in the center channel knows absolutely nothing about stereo. Channel seperation and Phasing is what creates a stereo image with only 2 speakers. It's so convinving and "real" that it seems like the voice is just hanging there in mid-air. In my not too fancy system newby's always isk if the center is on and not until they walk up to the speakers does the Iluusion disapear. by puttign the vocals, or ANYTIHNG, in the center channel it completely ruins any and all stereo imaging. The one thing that I heard that really impressed me with SACD was the trumpets in the opening of the Who's Tommy album, they were placed in the Surrounds. IT really cleaned up the music as it starts with Townsends guitar. Then he started singing out of the center channel Thumbs Down

At the time of the shootout I had Quad 22L's and the matching Quad center. The Quad center is not a monstorous center by any means but it's definitely not a "cute little under the TV speaker", using two 5 inch woofers and full size matching 1" tweeter.
It just doesn't matter what kind of center you have. by putting vocals, or Bass guitar, or god borbid drums (yes I've heard that too) in the center channel it completely kills stereo imagingf (see above). Also, the very shape of a center channel and it's difference in height relaitive to mains makes accurate Phasing and timing wih the main speakers completely impossible. These 2 things are critical to music . IMO The ONLY thing that belongs in the center channel is movie dialogue.
If SACD was 4.1 channel I would probablty own an SACD player.

For me, 5.1 is fine for video content being music videos, concerts or movies, stereo is fine for listening to cds, records.
