Ahhh, Vinyl !!!! That article reminded me of listening to my first Ultra High end Analog System. A local High end shop called the Speaker Shop here in Buffalo has a special room upstairs with their high end stuff. The had a pair of 50K+ pass mono blocks , B&W top of the line speakers I think the floor 805 or 803? cant remember ... and a 25K analog Turntable set up included in cost was table, arm, needle and phono amp. They put on a Ella Fitzgerald record and i litteraly thought i could feel her soft breath on my face. I heard every wheeze and breath she took, the slight scraping of the fingers along the guitar strings, not the purposeful ones, the ones that any other system would not have conveyed to the listener. I still dream of a system like that... some day.... some day......

Don't make me want something other than B&W's, John. Thats just cruel. I've been working for the past 6 months to get WAF. I don't need to say "Hunny I think I've found something better". Then I'll spend another 8 months getting her approve of those all the time hearing "But you said these were the best and you have to have them. Is there another speaker better than these new ones that you'll need to have?"

Dont worry about the wilsons. They are (imho) for the real, real audiophile. The retail in the 20 to 65k range.. per pair.

and dont even think about hooking your 7 channel receiver into these babies. If you just dropped half a hundred K on just speakers, you know you need some top monoblocks to drive them. And sourcing... and cabling....

Trust me, B&W makes a very fine speaker and you'll be VERY happy with them.

Besides, how you gonna tell the wife.. "sweetie, i just spent 50 grand on a pair of speakers"?????

If you gotta ask, dont do it!!! Wink

Audiophiles are needed, but they are also needed in proven they have an ear that can hear. How many self-proclaimed audiophiles get their hearing checked on a regular basis?

Buying into equipment you can never benefit from is silly. Of course, if you are one of those that can hear then power on!

Well you're not likely to scrap your CD collection and replace it with vinyl so you might as well. I ripped all my CDs to WMA lossless so I know at least I'm not making it worse than the original CD.

Interesting comments in the article about SACD. Didn't realize it was that good. I'm too lazy to look right now - what is the difference between a CD and SACD? And if you don't have crazy speakers like those Wilsons or B&W, is owning SACD even worth it?

I almost prefer the sound of vinyl. When I was younger I would fall asleep to my dad playing John Denver records.

I have a whole Iron Maiden collection on vinyl. Plus a few others like SuperTramp.

Yeah I know I'm Screwed up.

Was really kidding more than anything else. Though it is making me consider looking at some USB record players and seeing how that translates for some of the older stuff I have.

It's funny. I was watching "That Metal Show" on VH1 and they were talking about MP3s/itunes making album concepts irrelevant. Imagine getting part of the second side of The Beatles Abbey Rd or one song off of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. It's like putting a movie in and skipping to the credits.

Thats what is killing the music industry. People dont buy albums they buy hits. Think about how much classic music would be missed if we didnt have to buy the whole album.

Listening to my dad's The Doors album.... Light my fire is the last song on side 1.... might never have heard it if i just downloaded "break on thru"....

That and over production. Bands usually don't make jack on their first album until they prove they have staying power. So you get producers who pretty much take a band with mediocre stuff, fix it to be catchy and then toss them aside when they realize the garage band down the street will make more money.

Look at the Stones. Where they the mega stars they are today after their first album? Today, your probably better off to follow a producers career for music you like than a band.

SACD sounds fine, and yes you'll hear a difference even a $500. pair of speakers. The problem I had with it was the mixing. On one album they put the Vocals in the center channel Thumbs Down It sounded awful, flat and uninvolving, like............. well like a dialogue speaker was tring to play music. Rolling Eyes On another album they put the Bass riffs from the Yes Fragile album in the center channel, simply retarded. I think DVD-A you could choose 2 channel only, of course morons at sony made SACD fully suround only.

It took the stones a couple of years to build an audience, especially here in the US.

On paper it "sounds" better since most singers are in the "center". But when you saw ________ in concert; did the PA system have a center channel that only carried the singer's voice. Of course, I hate comparing live music because it rarely sounds as good, ignoring stellar live albums like Frampton Comes Alive or Ozzy's Tribute to Randy Rhoads.

Some damn executive probably sold a bunch of people too paranoid for their job to disagree that it sounded better.
