Oh, absolutely significant chunks were CG... But, there was less CG than you think... I think it was only about 20 minutes' worth of all-CG shots. Seems like a lot more, but that's what I think I remember reading.
Now, 20 minutes of CG means nearly 30,000 frames, which would have been a massive undertaking then... I mean, we're talking about when desktop computers had 64K of RAM and hard drives were 10 and 20MB. But, yeah - state of the art then, but totally crude, now.
Here... This should blow your mind... Some of these new hot-sh*t graphics cards could render TRON-style graphics in real-time at 60fps - even at 4k resolution, I'd imagine... So, if you could capture that stream to disk fast enough, you could render now in 10 minutes what undoubtedly took thousands upon thousands of hours back then.
What a difference 30 years has made, eh?

My body keeps reminding me. I was 26 when Tron came out. I am definitely NOT 26 now, even if my mind keeps trying to tell me otherwise!!

I was 12. Now I'm turning 40 in just a few weeks. Whaaaaaa....
Oh, and nothing like chasing around a 4 1/2- and 3 1/2-year old to wear you out, either!
