true, but there are 6 people in the survey who say they plan on at least painting the ceiling. One of you guys ought to get a couple of black bedsheets from walmart and some thumb tacks and see if a paintjob is worth your while!

Out of curiosity, do you think ceiling color matters MORE or LESS or SAME if the ceiling is vaulted, as in the pic of my living room here:

Less .

The number one tweak I did to my CRT was go to a completely Black fabric room ,it was a smaller room and the image difference from all Black paint to fabric was a HUGE improvement. The screen is the only thing not black and it sits three inches out from the back wall . The effect of this is incredible, especially in scenes where is is Pretty Black like an outside night scene and the only thing you see is the person stumbling around in the dark you do not want to see walls or anything else to pull you out of the movie . It really adds an experience in Fade to black scenes as well . When it goes Black, it is Black, you get a slight sensory deprivation feeling when it holds to an all black screen a slight sense of panic should set in that is what CRT is all about .

Steve I am completely surprised about your room. IT is a beautiful room for having friends over watching a plasma in.. Laughing With all the time you spend on micro improvements on your projector You should really see what a CRT Can do, Forget changing out chips, and 1% increase in specs on a specific resistor. Send the wife on a weekend trip and Go Buy roll of dense black light absorbing Fabric and go to town on your whole room, cut some holes out for the lenses and sit back and enjoy .Laughing

That's Chromatic Abberation caused by the lens of the camera he used. Typically happens on the edges.

Color distortion in an image produced by a lens, caused by the inability of the lens to bring the various colors of light to focus at a single point.

Ok I know but I just thought I would liken it to CRT's in keeping with the situation.

Don't know if this link will work or not but trying to show the effect of masking my 4:3 screen and what a drammatic difference it makes. If it works you can also see the effect the light bleed has on my ceiling (this is even with venetian blinds and dark blue curtains. There is a set of mirrors on the left side but in my opinion; since not white; all the mirrors do is reduce the room size and don't detriment visually. What is really bad is the light off the ceiling at night (and the white backside of the masking shade (my next projects)

my walls and ceiling are a very dark brown, they still reflect some light,so I will be adding some acoustic panels w/ black velvet in the near future. The dark room is not an option for everyone but it gives a more immersive experience if you can swing it.

I agree man that room is awesome! i greatly prefer a living room setting over a theater setting and yours is premo!

Bruce, do you have some particular brand of fabric or is it just whatever is on sale at the fabric store? I've been talking to my girlfriend about curtains on the sides of the screen and i think she would be ok with a dark red flat velvet like a classic movie theater would this work about as well as black?

I'm talking about this but i'm still not sure if it is worth my while. I will have a rear projection setup with a 3.5 gain Draper diamond screen so ambient light is not as big of a problem. anyone care to comment?

If you could only darken one or two surfaces in the room, how would you prioritize the following:

1. Ceiling
2. Side walls
3. Wall behind screen
4. Rear wall of room
5. Floor

Starting with the most important:
Wall behind screen
Side walls
Ceiling
floor

I personally started with the floor only because if you don't do that before anything else, than it isn't going to happen.

And more important as any wall darkening in that room you posted is controlling the light sources; whether the window/door treatments or making sure you can otherwise keep the daylight out and not have the kind of lighting bound to wash out the blacks.

Daylight? It's dark at night. Daytime is for going outside and doing stuff (or working...), not for hiding in the HT!

Thanks for all the Great comments, Cool Cool Cool Much Apprecited

My Wife and I agreed when we moved from Hong Kong to here, even if we had a dedicated room for a HT, we wouldn't use it often enough to enjoy it, so we chose the living room and enjoy it every day. Thumbs Up
So our 2 Boy's got the room, which is their playroom for them to keep the toys out of the living room. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I had a wide angle lens on my camera, so this is the mis-convergence as Kal pointed out.

I have window shutters for daytime viewing, not 100% dark, probably around 90%,
But nightime, it is 100% black,

I do know that a ceiling mask would improve the image, as I had one installed in our previous appartment, it was only about 50cm wide, but made a big difference.
Still working on a solution that will keep the Wife happy.

Pic without the wide angle lens,
Plus a couple of pics of my previous masking setup. Note all the toys Mr. Green

Cheers
Steve
