WHO MAKES CRT PROJECTORS
Other than VDC in Cape Canaveral, does anyone know of another manufacturer making CRT-based front or rear projection systems?

For those that are curious, Alan is an editor for various online tech sites (hope you don't mind me telling everyone this Alan)!
Curt and I already wrote him back but I thought it would be a good conversion to get going here in the forum.
Here's my response to Alan via email:
| Quote: | Hi Alan,
Yes, most of the units sold are refurbished, though there are a few that are new-old-stock (NOS) or simply new.
There are a few companies left that manufacturer CRT projectors I believe such as VDC.
I've cc'ed Curt (the site owner). He'll be much better positioned to answer your question.
Another good option (if you want a wide variety of fast answers) is to post the question in our CRT Projectors forum here: http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1
It's where a lot of the CRT and home theater pro's hang out.

Curt's response:
| Quote: | Hi Alan, the only company at this point that makes CRT projectors is indeed Video Display located in Florida. Barco made CRT projectors up until January of 1999, but discontinued them at that point.
VDC and Barco more or less got out of the home theater market a few years ago, as the pricing of the industrial CRT projectors was simply too expensive to compete with the digital pricing, so the whole CRT home theater market became (and for the most part was always) a do it yourself thing. Since the sets are modular, parts are easily swapped, troubleshooting is also easy, either via emailing a tech like myself, or posting on a forum like the one that Kal linked you to below.
There’s also a CRT FAQ article here on the site that will give you more insight:
http://www.curtpalme.com/CRTPrimer.shtm
The advantage of CRT, as you may already know, are the perfect blacks, high reliability, no motion artifacting/delays due to signal processing, and longevity, so that even a used CRT projector will far outlast any new digital technology.
Feel free to call or email if you have any other questions.
Cheers!

Barco got out of CRT projectors in January 2009 didn't they? Was it 1999?

I think there might be a few specialty CRT simulator companies , and I think some Caligraphy Projector makers. Q4 Services did make a CRT based projector however i am not sure if they still do but they do service them. Also Thomas Electronics makes lots of CRT products and if given a design i think could make the whole Projector as they have the capabilities and do make HVPS, Convergence,Focus, and deflection Coils also they can help you come up with a neck board amp design and the other electronics needed. here is the link to their capabilities.

Well VDC did acquire the raster caligraphic projectors from E&S several years ago. The Old Thomson SUPRA simulation projectors are still around, but haven't been manufacturered for years, there was a company modyfying these to use PLUG's though. According to Gress Eisseman Boeing is still serving the flight simulator market.
Some companies do still advertise their modded Marquees online.
