Hi Y'all,

I got a bit of a problem, got a small sony D50 which imo makes to much noise!

Has anybody fan modded a Sony D50, 70 or 90?

my other option is to make a hushbox, but thats not really a good option as i have a concrete ceiling and my neighbor probably doesn't want a 6" tube on his floor.....

is it possible to make a good improvement without tubing and fans in another room?

best regards

Sure,

That's what I did. Makes a world of difference. Measures maybe 30-35 db@ 1 meter.

I am going to make something very similar some day but out of much thinner and lighter hardboard. Did you have a thread about this build? Any info on the exhaust port and temperature display? Very nice!

No I never bothered with a thread about the build just the forum pictures.

The exhaust port is here.

Basically lined with a medium density foam to cut down on sound reflection. A central vac uses the same technique for its' muffler.

The fans are controlled by a 12vdc PC fan speed controller made by Scythe . I use a line voltage thermostat to automatically turn the fan controller on and off based on the hush box temperature ~75 deg F.

http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=655&mode=next

It controls 4 fans and reads 4 RTDs (temperature). So I can monitor temperature for the PJ direct exhaust, hush box interior, exhaust port, and the ambient room.

The box is lined with 1" OC703 rigid fiber glass and egg create foam.

The 1/2" MDF alone made an improvement. The mass helps as does the OC703. I really only used the egg create foam to keep the fiberglas fibers under cover.

That' really it.

I like the fan speed controller and the tstat, but honest question, does it run the entire time you use the projector or only after trying 1080p for a few hours?

I am thinking that I can setup a remote exhaust fan and just let it run at all times. I do like the temperature display, but I was thinking more like those BBQ remote temperature readouts. Can you give me a link to the scythe fan controller and explain how you hooked it up?

All the time any bandwidth, it never cycles. It starts ~10 minutes after the PJ turns on. and turns off about 45 minutes after the PJ is off. It runs automatically based on the internal hush box temp.

The Fan controller is here...
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0281445

The way it works is the thermostat switches a standard 120V AC receptacle. Plugged into that is a 12/24vdc power supply that powers the fan control.

You need a 5/12V supply similar to this one with the 4 pin molex connector to plug directly into the fan controller. Shop around the prices vary greatly.

The 4 RTDs (temp sensors) came with the fan control. I then bought 2 12VDC 120mm PC fans. The controller does PCM or variable voltage your choice.

That seems pretty economical. I am thinking an inline duct fan or something of that sort. I like to hear that it runs all the time because I was planning on just putting it on an X10 switched outlet and then it would come on whenever I turn the projector on. Don't really think I would need a delay to let it run after the PJ turns off as the fans on the PJ dont do that.

Thanks for the help! Thumbs Up

Hi AFryia,

Thanks for the response, nice hearing there is a good solution.

You woudn't by any chance have a roughf skecht of your hushbox layout Embarassed ?
If not, it would be greatly appreciated if you could tell me how much space the fans need to work properly both behind and in front of them.

best regards

This all I sketched up. I had a drawing of the mount and PJ to work with.

It's not very scientific but I had 120mm fans so I ensured 120mm front and back. Seems to work well enough Smile

A few questions AFryia:

1. Do you have glass on the front of your box? If no why not?

2. Is the only air outlet at the back? How many fans is your hush box using there?

3. Where is the incoming air coming from? Is the incoming air also fan assisted?

4. How many fans are you using in total and where have you placed them.

5. Did you do before and after hush box temperature testing? If yes what was the difference?

Great pictures. If you can post pictures relating to above questions too that would be great.

No, my PJ pulls air in through the front around the lenses.

Frank D wrote:

Yes, and 2 - 120mm

Frank D wrote:

No assist on the in coming except the PJ own fans (3 - 120mm)

Frank D wrote:

PJ 3, hush box 2. Hush box fans are along the back of the box near the exhaust for the PJ.

Frank D wrote:

Basiclly the PJ exhaust is the same as without the hush box (45 C) so no temperature rise there. The interior is ~10 deg C lower (35 C) with an ambient outside the box ~25 C.
