Bolt comes out in 4 days - looking forward to watching this one with my son as it's not only a five-star rating on the audio /video side but is also a good movie. 100% due to the fact that John Lasseter from Pixar took over the Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative office. It's the first Walt Disney animated feature with John at the helm.
Who's seen it? What did you think?

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture
Walt Disney presents 'Bolt' in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video (1.78:1). It's a terrific presentation -- pixel perfect, in fact. I'd be hard-pressed to find a better Blu-ray released so far this year. (Note that Disney released 'Bolt' in 3-D for some theatrical showings. Only a 2-D version is offered here.)
I found the image flawless. A direct digital-to-digital conversion, the source is pristine, with excellent blacks and bold contrast. The color palette is incredibly bright and well-saturated, with striking primaries and great clarity to even the finest gradations. Typical of great CGI animation, the image is wonderfully detailed, dripping depth and sharp as a tack. The encode also suffers no arrows, with a smooth and noise-free appearance and no obvious artifacts or edge enhancement. I simply could not find anything wrong with this transfer -- it's 5 out of 5.
The Audio: Rating the Sound
Easily matching the video, this DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround is wonderfully alive and aggressive.
'Bolt' comes alive from the first frame, with wonderfully active surrounds that deliver a nicely sustained, 360-degree soundfield almost throughout. Pans are excellent in their tightness and seamlessness, and even minor atmosphere and score bleed is near-constant. Action scenes are as nicely done as the exterior locales, immersive, well-designed and executed. A wholly studio-constructed soundtrack, dynamic range is wide and full-bodied across the entire spectrum. Low bass reaches deep. This is a terrific, five-star soundtrack. |

I've really been looking forward to this too, Kal. Can't wait to see what will happen at the production powerhouse that is Disney in the coming years with the creative spirit that is Lasseter. Combine that with some renewed energy and spirit back at the company, and it could be a real re-birth. The studio seemed to be practically rudderless for so long, cranking out forgettable straight-to-video releases one after the other. Here's looking forward to a whole slew of exciting, new, creative and fun movies from the Disney-Pixar.
Bolt looks great! Classic Disney wonder meets Pixar fun/fantastic!

This thing better be amazing...it got a perfect score of 100 from the AVS reviewer.
I have no clue why he would do that, but I think my curiosity is peaked. Price is a bit high but definitely within reach. Let me know if the movie actually is worth it storywise.

I'm a bit curious now... might netflix it. I'm skeptical of any CGI that doesn't come straight from Pixar - but Lasseter is god...

I was so looking forward to it, but was left a little disappointed.
It looks great, sounds great (on Bluray), but Rhino stole the show. He's the reason the movie wasn't added to the "sell" pile.

Bolt Becomes First Blu-ray to Come Out Before DVD
Posted March 22, 2009 11:24 AM by Josh Dreuth
Walt Disney Studios Today, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is releasing 'Bolt' on Blu-ray, two days before the DVD release. This three-disc set, which includes not only the film on Blu-ray, but also a DVD and digital copy, features a beautiful high definition transfer that will show off the true potential of your HDTV accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack that will rock your surround sound system.
Be sure to head out today and pick up a copy of this great Blu-ray. Disney will be using the sales data from this title to gauge if future Disney titles should be released on Blu-ray before the DVD.

Ding! Ding! Ding!
I proposed that years ago as a way for HDDVD and/or BD to provide a nice benny for early adopters, instead of releasing crappy archive titles that everybody already owned on SD DVD.

Huh... How'd that happen?
A guy on Craigslist here is selling a new/unopened copy for $22. That's $5 cheaper than Amazon. I'd like to grab it for $22, but it's not really worth spending an hour and driving clear across town to save $5. Guess I'll just order it on Amazon.

Looks great, sounds great.........story, not so great
That's my opinion of course, definately a renter though if you haven't seen it.The only reason it's still on my hard drive is the kids, give them animation and sit back and enjoy the serenity

I would second that, the artwork is first class but the story sort of falls down...I like to tell the wife it's because Travolta has the same effect on a movie as William Shatner......
Given the choice my boys would rather see Cars again....and again....

I'm still excited to see it. We had some friends and their kids over last weekend, and I wanted to watch Bolt. They'd already seen it and suggested The Tale of Despereaux instead. One word: BOOOOOOOORRRRRIINNGGGG.
Not only with the story not involving, but to top it all off, it had this odd color grading that muted the colors and gave everything a hazy low-contrast look. Great. Boring AND nothing to look at. I didn't like the visual treatment, either. It was like it couldn't decide whether it wanted to be photo-real or illustrated. It was stuck in the middle. There was a cool dream sequence in the middle that was done in kind of a cut-paper style... THAT was cool. They should have done the whole damn movie that way - it would have been something different.
