I bought a Marquee 9501 off an avs forum member recently. I won't disclose the price yet, I don't want to affect the opinion of those here.

The tubes were described to be in good condition with light use. The problem with the set was that the green tube was leaking glycol significantly, which I knew about and can deal with. The chassis worked apparently. Here's a non flash image of the tubes.

Tell me what you guys would pay for this set in this shape. I've emailed the seller, will post his name here and on avs if there's no resolution here, needless to say, I've told him that I want some money back. I'll post his reply email once some of you post what you think the set is worth.

The set is not an Ultra, and came with HD10L lenses. Haven't powered it up yet, but despite the glycol leakage, it doesn't look like it got into the chassis. Seller is not willing to refund any amount, saying he knows nothing about projectors.

I've filed a dispute with Paypal for 50% of the purchase price.

The green tube is junk. Definitely not even close to "light use" or "good condition". That, coupled with the glycol leak and required maintenance, plus the fact that it's not an Ultra should lower the value compared to a clean 9501 Ultra by about $1.5k. Add the fact that the lenses are not the most popular, and the blue (?) tube is also just a 6-7, the value should be about $2.25k to $2.5k lower than a clean 9501 Ultra w/o red C-Elements.

Not lightly used, the seller shouldn't assume things about a product that they don't know. $700?

It's not what I should have paid...

If you buy something from someone who doesn't know much about crt you can expect some suprises.

At the other hand, would you give an extra bonus if you buy something in better condition then expected?

You seem to have a target painted on your back lately and I think you painted it yourself. That said, I'm curious why you buy stuff like this and the recent Runco episode, without asking for pictures of the tube faces first. This is kind of a trick question. What a end user would/should pay for a CRT projector sight un-seen is more than you should be willing to part with. Given the recent prices I've seen for good condition 9500's for sale, for you to buy it, make any repairs required, sell it and stand behind it, you shouldn't pay more than 5-7 hundred sight un-seen. Even at that price with a complete re-tube and you are past what you would be able to sell it for.

Big flag, REALLY BIG f*cking FLAG, "I don't know anything about CRT's". They'll fall back on that line all the time but notice that they seem to know exactly how much to ask for a good one Wink Then you have to think, how is it that they have it? They knew enough about CRT projectors to want a Marquee (but should'a held out for a 4600HD) Mr. Green and a AVS member to boot. Bull$hit, he knew exactly what he had.

In this economy, you can't make to many mistakes. You are to trusting or getting lazy in your old age. It doesn't cost anything to ask for pictures first. If they want the sale thay will provide them.

I wouldn't pay more than $500 for a set like that. With it needing all three tubes it shouldn't be worth more than parts.

You know yourself that set isn't worth its weight in scrap aluminum.

The real question is, with projector SALES the way they are, why in hell are you buying ANY projectors any more ???

I would think that if you started selling now, you'd *maybe* get all your sets and parts and crap moved out before they become ONLY worth what the value of the scrap aluminum is...

That set isn't worth the cost to have it shipped to you.

Your business model should be going back to the original one where you only sold what you had on hand. Your fixed prices are choking off much of your potential sales, and holding/hoarding stock is costing you a ton of money.

Lastly though, being a long time buyer of these things, you should know better than to buy sight unseen from a seller who *claims* lack of knowledge, yet surprisingly has enough savvy to push you to pay a lot more than you're comfortable with...

Excellent question, btw...

Not Knowing what the Glycol leak has done to the PJ electronics id say 500 cause thats what you might get for the LC housings and maybe the VNB's since they are probably the only thing not affected by that large amount of Glycol leakage, almost 1/3 is gone!!! I have seen what a table spoon of that stuff will do. if it was ceiling mounted and no glycol got on anythting then maybe 700-900.

Well if you need bellows you know where to get them Wink I have started collecting for the project .

BTW, I wasn't saying he should pay 5-7 hundred for this one but 9" LC's sight un-seen in general.

Yep, I can appreciate the target CHip. However, once I link to the avs post below, you'll see how the seller represented it:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1102020&highlight=

Here's his followup email to me:

OK , I never said that the tubes were pristine . All I stated was I thought they were in good shape. I am no expert at all about projectors. I never open this unit up . I would even know how to open this up. This projector had not leaked into the unit before it shipped. It was working except for the green tube issue . (And even still with an excellent picture I might add until the green was messed up to the point that I took it down. I do know that parts on these projectors are very expensive and even if you had to part this out you would get more than a thousand dollars for this unit. I would think with your abilities this could be disassemble and cleaned up to working condition. If feel no need to do anything about this and probably could not anyway. I saved the money for several weeks if some unforeseen issue came about but had to take care of my own personal issues with this money.. It was not my intention to mislead you . And in my emails I tried to be straight forward as to the condition of the unit.. Even a blue tube with a 7 condition is worth at least 500.00 considering the price of rebuilt or new ones. And we also spoke several times about the unit on the phone.. Sorry for your dissatisfaction but there is nothing I can do.

This highlighted from the avs posts:

I can assure you this is not a parts machine. it has a very good red and blue . It has some wear on the green as do all . It was handled in a way not to spill glycol on the mainboard. I am not a newbie at this. thanks.

He claims to know nothing about CRTs in the email above, but then grades the tubes on avs, and above tells me that the blue tube is worth $500. Hardly.

To me, clearly the seller knew something about CRTs, and I was expecting a lightly worn green, along with HD10 lenses that he posted about in an earlier thread. I don't even really care about the lenses. All I wanted was a usable green to sell a 9" set cheap to one of a couple of people that want a cheap set, and don't really care about wear as is shown on the blue tube.

And to answer Jantje, yes indeed, I am actually buying sets that way now. If someone trusts me and is unwilling to pull lenses or do further checks on a set for me, I'll offer a low price, based on the set being used for parts only, assuming burnt tubes. If I get the set and the tubes are usable to some degree, I will fire the seller some more funds. I've bought about 10 sets that way, and have sent two people extra money after I got the set. So there! Smile

Anyways, I've disputed a portion of the purchase price with Paypal, we'll see how it goes.

I am sure you knew what you were getting. There has only been one 9500 that fits that description on avs recently and it was known to have a burnt green... Don't try to get something for nothing and then get pissed when you get burnt. Honestly, you buy on speculation, you should be prepared for these situations...

Man can you tell me where to get a 9500 A/C or L/C for $500? Every where I go people think they've got gold. I always hear the same sh*t ,"I don't know anything about this but I can get more for the parts than I'm asking". If you know that then you most certainly are aware of something.

I was shafted by a Flea- bay guy Lastnight he agreed to a price with me and then relisted this morning. And for more than his original asking price. *******. Used *******. Mad

How about you post more context to the projector:

Seller:
"I would say the tubes or about a 7 with the green being about a 6. Shows wear."

Further down an avs member response:
He has a 9500 with burnt tubes and a Glycol leak. That makes it an Organ donor because I can't imagine anyone in their right mind paying a lot for a machine that needs re-tubing + possibly a motherboard, backplane , and both power supplies.

Caveat Emptor..

Baesd on the CRT tube rating chart (http://www.curtpalme.com/TubeCondition_RatingChart.shtm) the green tube's more like a 4 or 3, or even a 2. Not a 6. Definitely not useable.

I would say its up to the buyer to verify the condition of the tubes. If the seller won't oblige, then I would move to another seller, at that point your taking an assumed risk. We talk all day about ebay sellers not showing tube faces and how we would never buy from them, how is this any different?

Thanks Kellener, I'm assuming AKA Gary R. Point is, the set was grossly misrepresented. It won't kill me, even if Paypal doesn't refund any funds, but I'll make sure people on avs are aware of Gary's tactics when selling stuff.

BTW, I did remove the green tube to see where the leak was coming from, and to see if the glycol got into the chassis. I placed it back into the set to take the picture.

This wasn't meant to be a whining post, I just wanted an honest opinion from members here so that I can link Paypal to it if required. I've gotten that now, thanks!.

My take $500 max in this day and age for that condition. My 2 cents probably worth 1.
