DOes it matter which way the diode is oriented?

I will splice the diode into the red wire, but which way to orient the polarity marker of the diode?

I think I see...I have to have the polarity marker on the side closer to the fan...not the fan connector, right?

Are you trying to slow down a fan? if so you need a zener diode that only allows a certain voltage to go through and blocks the rest, you could do the same with a resistor but I think the zenner is safer as it wont break contact and still will allow voltage to go through but usually more so the fan would go faster. At least I think it works this way.... long day at work and cant think... Sad

TV/Projector: All of them!

That works, but is a really bad idea. I had to scrap a really nice NEC PG last year, as 'I've done a fan mod, you should hear how quiet it is' I was told when I accepted the set on trade. Tubes were still mint, the set was about 1/3 of the noise of a normal PG, but every board in the set was cooked.

I don't even care if I cook it...and I don't think I will. Ile did the same mod and ran his projectors 4+ years. I run low contrast and low scan rate to boot...and my Canadian basement is quite cool.

Anyhow, I got it done. I didn't put anything on the angled fan though...but the projector is definitely quieter.

Now onto the ceiling with it!! I may or may not proceed with a hushbox as well. We'll see how annoying it gets.

Thanks,

Ben

The horizontal and focus boards run pretty hot. I'm with Curt and the engineers at Barco. Good luck though...

I told you...I don't care if I fry it. I bought it for $200...and I won't enjoy it if it's loud. It may fry, it may not...I don't care.

My bet is that it won't fry though...

Most of the noise is from the front fan and the center fan in the back. I put diodes on those and that did not fry anything in a 1000+ hours. That said I am with Tom on the focus board that runs toasty and I had one fail in a low hour 808 that was NOT fan modded. One of the ones in my Runco 1100s (which is the same board as an 808 with the smaller heatsink) is also fried (again not modded). Personally you will get 85-90% of the noise reduction effect with those the two fans I mentioned. That said parts are cheap these days so as long as you don't mind down time and/or don't notice any issues with heat (you might get more convergence drift and the like because of the temperature swing being larger). I am glad to be back to the 120x chassis now as they are quieter than the 808 so no mod necessary.

When I find a steal of a deal on a 120x, I'll probably but one...but in the mean time, I'm fine with this risk. I don't even care if I fry something. I rarely use the damn thing as it is...it's more of a hobby. Critical movie watching has still been upstairs for a while now.

At any rate...low contrast, low scan rate, cold basement...and I only modded 2 fans. I can live with the risk.
