Ok,
Be honest, and no emotion. A well setup NEX XGLC Vs a 9"'er
How much of an improvement? No emotion remember, but be objective. How much brighter etc etc. So in real world tersm, would it be VHS ----> DVD or more like DVD----Superbit DVD

The only 9" I have see is Cliff's stack...The difference between my XG 1351 is HUGE!!!!
After seeing it I could not turn on my projector for two week....No joke.

No fair. Besides being a stack which gives you twice the brightness, his system was installed by a person who is regarded as one of the best professional installers on the planet.
My experience with many 8" LC units and a single 9" unit is that you see a 9" inchers ability to resolve detail right off the bat as well as the brightness advantage. There was no getting around the fact that the 9 incher is the better projector. However, I think the main advantage is a 9" allows you to go bigger. Even a non LC unit like a NEC Extra on a 6' screen looks pretty incredible. I would say, from my experience, a 9" looks similar on an 8' or 9' screen to what a good 8" looks like on a 6' screen.
Not the best analogy I know. Sitting back 16' from an 8" screen, the differences between an 8" and 9" becomes less noticeable than if you are in the first row but then again I've never seen a professionally installed 8" or 9" unit so my opinion is based on experience only.
Right now 9" are still too expensive for my pocket book but 9 inchers are the pinnacle of CRT front projection so I will eventually buy another. ( I sold the G90 because I paid $400 shipped and could not resist the urge to make a 'lil' profit

An XGLC can be sharper than a 9500lc... stock 9500 will not be as sharp, in my opinion.
A fully tricked out 9500 might be better...notice I said might. I would see no need to upgrade your XGLC.
The bigger question...are you dissatisfied with the XGLC?
I would imagine a Barco would be a nice upgrade though...

Nope, just curious. To be brutally homest.
If and when I upgrade I will be going to the Grey side most likely. By then they will be sub $2k for some hotshit 1080p unit that is better in most ways to CRT except for black and color most like. In 2 years, not worth paying $3-5k for a CRT when you can have a digital for $2k.
Though, I love my XG. It was essentially free, and works. Right now, discretionary spending is on the back burner. Except for all those $4 HD DVD's at Loblaws
p.s Mike, No fair that don't count and you know it

If you don't intend to replace the screen, the biggest difference you will notice is tube life (assuming they are both ser up the same). If you are a casual user, I'd stick with the NEC. If your projector is on more then off as mine is, then I would go for a 9"er. Also you will be hard pressed to find any projector that will match it in color.

Mike | Isn't this a little like comparing apples and oranges?
One XG vs stacked G90s?

I am wondering the result because I am seriously considering if I have to upgrade to 9". I live in Taiwan, so I have to pay more shipping, like US$700, to buy a CRT projector from US and it is very difficult to resell it in Taiwan if I don't like it. If a 9" doesn't have a huge improvement, I will waste money.
I own XG110, not LC, with a professional installation by myself. So it have almost perfect geometric installation and ISF calibration. I am satisfied with it, but I am wondering how much 9" can improve.
So my question is if both(especially XG, not Lc) are professionally installed and projecting on a 7' wide screen, how much difference?

Just being 9" doesn't automatically trump everything 8". There are a lot of not that interesting 9" machines.
I still stand by my Best/Worst list here: http://www.curtpalme.com/Projector_Rankings.shtm
Where I state that the NEC XG LC, Sony G70, and Barco Cine 8 Onyx/Zenith 1200 (all high end 8" LC machines) will give you a better all-around HT presentation than the following 9" machines:
Ampro 4000
Barco 1200
Sony 1292
Ampro 4200
Ampro 4600
Marquee 9000
Barco 1209
Barco 1209/2
NEC 10PG/Runco 990
The only 9" machines that (IMHO) are BETTER than those high end 8" LC machines (which include the NEC XG LC) are:
Barco 1209s (the 's' is important)
Marquee 9500LC (though in stock form it's not that impressive)
Marquee 9500LC Ultra
Sony G90
Barco Cine 9 / 909
This list obviously assumes that the tube are all good and that the projector is set up properly. Someone who has no idea how to properly set up a Barco Cine 9 will end up with something that looks no better than an average projector.

Wait, an 8"er is better than my Ampro 4000? Say it isn't so...

You shols talk to Mark W. Turn that AC into an LC, you will get the most effect just doing that. Though the AC XG's rock as well, and are sharp as a tack

Kal,
Have you seen all of those pjs? I haven't looked at your list in a long time, but I have a hard time believing that the 4600 is worse than the 8" pjs. I am not sure about the 10PG, but I think you might get an arguement from Tinman on whether an XG is better than it.

You need housings, c-elements, lenses, & mountings plus there's the non-trivial task of
dismounting and remounting the tubes, without breakage or leakage. NEC housings
are very tight - this is not an easy job like on a barco or marquee...

It seems that LC does matter in your point of view?

I waffle on the LC nonLC debate...put it this way...I now have a nonLC and don't find it objectionable in any way.
AC XG is probably the sharpest projector you can find...I would do some work to make it quieter and just keep it!

Basically what Galen said.
But it's not *that* hard to redo the tubes.
The hard bit is getting all the parts. You also need a LC-version lens cover, as the LC lenses are bigger and won't fit through the holes in the AC-version cover.
These days it would be easier to find a LC chassis on Ebay.
I have seen a G90 a number of times, professionally setup.
Yes, it's better. It's certainly brighter and will drive a bigger screen.
But an 8" LC unit is about 80% of the way there, and on a 2-2.5m wide screen does just fine.
EM focus and LC are bigger jumps than XG-LC to G90 IMO. When you back to back an AC unit and a LC one (I stacked them and then got the pic-mutes out of sync so pressing the mute button swapped them), you realise just how washed out an AC projector is.
That said if anyone wants to give me a 9"er I wouldn't say no I'd quite like a 1209s with coloured C elements.
