.. I've had my Bell 6000 satellite receiver for about 6 years. It's worked fine. I know a bunch of people here have told me to upgrade, that the 6100 or 6200 receiver have a better image, but for my use in my HT room, it's fine.
Today I get a notice from Bell, telling me that as of March 31 my receiver will 'not be compatible with their latest technology' and I need to upgrade. I can get a free HD receiver, or pay $375 for a PVR. While I'd love an HD PVR, it's not in the budget right now. Do I REALLY need to upgrade, and should I throw my perfectly good 6000 receiver on eBay? I know they were selling for $400ish a couple of years ago, I'll bet they are not worth that now.
Point is, while I have a Fury2 and HDMI switcher, why swap something that's working fine right now?

Curt, did you forget to log sparky out again? or is this really a sparky question?
Dish Network obsolete my 6000 about 6 months ago. They when to MP4 compression and the hardware cannot handle it.

That seems pretty expensive for an HD PVR. Is that for an outright purchase (you own it), or just to have it in your home?

For that kind if coin, you could get an HD TiVo - not sure whether they work with satellite, though. God knows it would be better than any kind of factory DVR (cough.. PVR) - all the factory ones I've seen are Windows 3.1 to TiVo's OSX...

$375 is the outright purchase price, pretty good, I think they are over $400 in stores. I'll put mine on CL today for $300, see if it sells. If so, I'll find $75 to get the PVR. And yes, things are WAY cheaper in the US when it comes to stuff like this.

The Tivo will cost you more in the long run as you pay a month fee. You don't pay a monthly fee when you buy the $400 HD-PVR from Bell ExpressVu. You get the PVR and guide and all those features for free.
I sold my 6000 a couple of years ago when we bought the 9200 HD-PVR. I paid $600 for mine though. Prices have come down.
Check what version of 6000 you have. When I sold mine there was a huge market for a certain version of 6000 that was easily hacked or something. These versions sold for a lot more money.
In the end I sold my 6000 and the other SD receiver combined for almost as much as I paid for the HD-PVR. Not a bad deal.
While I don't watch much TV, after owning the HD PVR, I'd never go back to 'regular' TV. Being able to pause/fast forward/record shows so easily is a god-send. I just tell the PVR what sort of shows I like so that when I have free time and want to watch something, there's a list of a shows to choose from and I never have to sit through commercials.

No kidding? I've had my 6000 in the closet gather dust. Guess I should break it out and put on Ebay, I'm sure with my luck the value will be about $10 now.

It probably doesn't have the value it once had, specifically because of the switch to MPEG-4. Same thing happened with DirecTV HD Tivos. What once was $1000 at retail and even $500-600/ea. a few years later, became worth maybe $100 last year when DirecTV switched to MPEG-4. I hope it still has some value, but don't get your hopes up.
I agree with the comment that Tivo is superior, though. Too bad you don't have a choice with satellite. I went from a Tivo-based DirecTV DVR to DirecTV's latest whiz-bang "house-brand" DVR, and the difference is like night/day. The new DirecTV box's UI looks like a second-year UI design class project... from 1990... while the Tivo looks like some pros who know what the hell they were doing designed it. I'm not exaggerating. The graphics on the brand new box are generally two- or three-color and aren't even anti-aliased. The button layout and user interactions suck.
The old original Philips Tivo that I had back in 2000 or 2001 has a far superior looking (and working) UI to the brand spankin' new 2008 model DirecTV DVR I have now. How pathetic.
