Did you do that removal and install by hand? Great work with such small connections.

Yes I did it by hand. I do have the correct tools for such a task which helps
Normally this amount of work would have taken me about 30 minutes. But I was supper careful due to the rarity of this particular IC. The extra care added more than four hours because I wanted to use as little heat as possible. I actually reworked the IC421's on both boards first with low temperature alloy. This way when I applied the hot air to lift the IC421, it could be kept short and at a low temperature. The IC421 was barely even warm at the center during the entire process. Trouble is that low temp alloy is a pain to clean up when the IC legs are so close together and fragile... time time and more time!

Yeah, big surprise.
Craig may have a point. My IC421 came off a G90 with 1300 hrs. I guess if they're able to get past a critical number of hours they should be OK, or at least be a bit more robust. Those high hour beater G90's with fried tubes look even more attractive now, as they've demonstrated longevity.
What was the SN of projector?

This is interesting as the one that I purchased that was demonstrating the dreaded shut-down problems only displayed 150hrs on it and the tubes were as white as snow. Well, aside from the deflection burn in all three, they really looked like brand new! However, my YA board has been tested by both Curt and Terry now and they both have confirmed that it is functioning correctly. That means that there is a different fault in my projector. Terry had a G90 that displayed almost the exact same symptoms as mine and he found that it was an issue with the PA board. Now that I have the PJ back in my possession, that's something we'll have to look into. I'll check the serial number tonight just to see, though.

Sing with me,
I like my AmPro, my AmPro likes me.
You can stick that G-90 in a place you can't see.

All,
Here is an update about Terry's YA board which lacked of RS232C communication :
Good new : the board is now fully OK
Here is the complete operations Ive made on this board :
Replacement of IC921 (with a brand new device),
Replacement of IC941 (with a part taken from the other defective YA board),
Replacement of C946,C945, C944, C941 (0.1΅F ceramic with a parts taken from the other defective YA board),
Checked every tracks impedance from RS232C connector util Main CPU (IC201),
Resolder IC201 pin #37 to pin#72 (tricky job),
Resolder main firmware flash chip pins (IC234)
Mount the board inside my test chassis, power-up : 88/88/10/11
Hook the laptop with the proper RS232C cable to the YA board,
Start PJupdate software, tried to establish connection with the board with no success ( no status, no YA board detected so IC234 content is corrupted),
Switch Pjupdate software in emergency mode,
Switch down the G90 from main, restart it again and wait for 11 displayed on the YB display,
Launched the downloading of the software in emergency mode : display starts to switch between 11 and 12 !
Let the PJupdate download the complete software to the YA board,
At the end, display shows ZF, then 11 then 88/88 then blanck,
Used PJupdate to display the unit status : G90 is detected and reported as in Standby Mode,
Switch on the G90 with remote, units starts fine and I displayed the menu, no problem,
Used PJupdate to display the unit status : G90 is detected and reported as in running Mode,
Switch off the G90 with remote,
Used PJupdate to display the unit status : G90 is detected and reported as in Standby Mode,
Disconnected G90 from main and remove YA board and reinstalled mine.
Another YA board repaired my fourth one indeed
John

Nice job, John. What do you believe the main problem was? I see the first 3 lines of repair pertain to the RS232 communication. Were you testing the board in between repairs? Did you find specific failure readings of these parts? Was the resoldering required or just a preventative measure? You can respond via PM if you dont want to post here. I'm curious on a very detailed process of your findings. Thanks

Very nice work indeed John!!
Macgyver, that boards symptoms were that it would not communicate via RS-232 with PJUpdate but seemed to be requesting updates. It was also not operational.

- Tried the card back in the unit after replacement of IC921 (with a brand new device) : no joy,
- then I did all the other replacements (IC941, C946,C945, C944, C941) and resoldered IC201 pin #37 to pin#72 together with main firmware flash chip pins (IC234); all together in one step without testing the board bak in the unit.
So I really don't know where was the real failure... I think that maybe IC201 resoldering job ?

So you tried emergency mode update before replacing ic921, then again after just replacing ic921 and no go on both occasions? Then after last repair emergency mode did work?

Big kudos to John on this. I lack the digital data troubleshooting skills, but am fluent in analog. I should have paid attention in computer class rather than playing Space Invaders.

I know I have had to replace those RS232 driver ic's (MAXxxx) on many occasions in different displays for a no communication problem. To bad we didn't know for sure if that was the case here.....

Nothing. I've been successful repairing other boards in the G90, but have two Ya boards here right now that have issues that can't be repaired. I'm guessing there's at least 8 people that I know of right now looking for working Ya boards.
