I guess the current crop of sub-$1,000 1080P projectors are coming. Linky

Having seen most of the low priced 1080p PJs, I'm betting its picture "sucky".

No one is talking about quality in this thread. Assuming anything other than sucky is silly.

I thought Dark Chip II was pretty good for picture quality ??
This can only be good news, it will have the same effect on the market that the Infocus X1 did in 2002. It brought all the prices down, no one would have imagined projectors like the JVC at the price they're at nowadays, back before the X1

While it may be, you can't judge this pj on previous DC2 implementations. Also, you like the DC3, but Joe Kane didn't and used the DC2 for his 710.
There is a new Optoma HD20 that should be out soon as well that costs around $1k. It is using the DC2 chip.

I don't agree with your representation of the 710. That projector was in development FOREVER!!!! When the series first began development, DC3 was not out. The PJ was already so late that they did not change development.
Of course, then releasing a $12,000 DC2 PJ when the market was full of good and very good $6000-$12,000 DC3 PJs, Kane had no option but to say "I don't like DC3, my projector is better, buy it."
I agree that if you got a problem free 710 (I've had 3 in my theater and only 1 of them was trouble free), in many ways it was a special machine. But the CR sucked. I had the 7100 and the 710 in the theater at the same time. I would describe the 7100 as having "minor washout" in low APL scenes. The 710 was "quite washed out". Not as bad as the 1400x788 JVCs, but distractingly bad.
YMMV

While that may be true, I can only take Joe on what he said. I seem to remember he said he had access to the DC3, but chose to stick with the DC2. You may be right and I may be crazy. Of course, this was the same Joe who when asked by yours truly what is the market for this pj when 1080p comes out (this was 2006 Infocomm), he replied that it would make a good bedroom pj. Everyone laughed and I probably did to a little, but I thought it was kind of arrogant.
As for the 710, I have heard about the troubles. Everyones favorite calibrator says that 710s that were factory serviced have been bullet proof. Where yours sent in for factory service or was Ken blowing smoke?

Doesn't make you crazy, but I don't find it hard to believe that he would act in his best interest.

Do some searching on AVS if curious. Their were so many problems when AVS was selling, they halted shipment and selling them. Then Samsung said, "we've found the fix". AVS then told everyone that had ordered than Samsung was going to open every one AVS had, fix them, then AVS would ship them out. Well, that happened, guess what? Still craploads of problems with them, so AVS dropped selling them for good.
As far as the two problem ones I had my hands on--both factory done. One had the "lower corner yellowish discoloration" that some of them had, the other one had another problem that had been reported. Neither of them had the start up issue in the short time they were in my posession. So, the start up issue may have been eventually fixed (though not the first time around if you look at AVS's history with it), but they had other issues.
EDIT: Also remember that Ken is a big Kane supporter.

Interesting, so Ken is glossing over the issue. From what I can see, he is selling the new Samsungs. I would be curious how he handles service if there is a lot of problems. It is funny in that there is another dealer in Colorado that says he puts these in his high end installs. I wonder what he did with customer complaints. Having been down that road with some bad products, I can say that there is nothing worse than a customer calling you back with a problem. Profit meet toilet.

Also though, just because the 710 was buggy does not mean that the SP-A800B has any issues. I have not seen one yet, but I bet they look great.
I will say, for the 710s that worked correctly, they were impressive save the low CR. One guy locallyswapped his out for an Epson 1080UB. We did an over/under comparison using a variety of HD content and the 710 looked better across the board save for the low CR. If fact, the 710 looked so much better I let my smart-a$$-ness escape and said "you really think the Epson is an upgrade?"
