Im thinking i might paint the Sony VPH-1001QM, its looking abit beat up.
Have a look at it for god sake....
The old girl had a really tough life.....
So anyway, how many people here have painted their projector case? What colours look good on them? Does anyone have any pics they can show of painted cases?
Cheers people

I painted a sony 1272 one time with Krylon ultra flat black. It came out really good and the ultra flat made it disappear when thwe lights went down.

Cheers mate, i was thinking satin black myself too, not quite flat black, but satin black should look like it was meant to be that way (hopefully!!)

I painted the plastic sides to my Electrohome 8500 flat black. I thought the factory color sucked. I used a Rustoleum paint I had laying around.

I also painted my 8500 -- more of a satin, but with the crinkle paint under it, it still looks pretty flat. A primer under-coat is a good idea.

Case,
I think you are on the right path with satin. I painted some test pieces with three different levels of gloss and found that I flat just didn't look that good. A little gloss will make the pj look better and won't do that much damage to the projected image.

I find from my automotive experiance that gloss on a textured surface can someimes look 'off '. It's likely because the angles change and reflect the light differently. Where as a semi or a flat aren't as prone to this.

i painted my ECP 4100 a metallic blue with some spray paint, looks great. Maybe flat black would be better? it would make the projector disapear when in use but i chose to make it look good when its off looks very sharp. also, i had a sony like that and i painted it fire engine red, looked like a new projector. too bad she died on me. :/ its sitting on my porch, waiting to be recycled. i also have another ecp that needs a HV power supply. someday i want to get one for it, then i'll have another machine for parts. but that one has the brighter tubes.. .oh well, i'm rambling..

I still like the idea of the Vidkron Piano black case. The thing's almost the size of a baby grand, so it might as well have the same paint job!

Im probably more interested in it looking as good as it can more so than dissapearing when in use, itll be seen turned off by alot more people than will see it turned on!!

I was thinking that myself, i thought about glossing it up, but that would make alot of prep work and would need a fair few coats for it to be smooth and scratch free looking.

Yep, i know exactly what youre talking about there, the plastic fuel rail covers on an LT1 Corvette engine are probably a perfect example of such a plastic surface:

That looks great! I'm about to paint the sides of my 8500 black as well. I already painted the top black when I got it 5 years ago, but I never got around to taking the sides off to complete the job. Now I'm psyched to get it finished.

For the plastic case of my Barco 808, I used a bumper coat black, I forget the brand exactly, but purchased at an auto supply store. It's a thick coat, and it takes forever to fully dry(it dries quick, but is very fragile and easily scratched for a long time, I'd say days. After that though, it's incredibly rugged), but makes a very tough black outer exterior, and IMO looks excellent. It's not as rugged(or thick and heavy) as like a spray-on truck liner, but the stuff is quite tough. I recommend it.

This is a Septone product, for painting plastic and vinyl. It goes on as thick or thin as you like depending on how fast you move the can while you spray. That is only one coat yet though, ill have to sand it back with the wet and dry and give it another coat yet

Looks nice!
Being a designer, I always wanted to design a silkscreen and have somebody silkscreen new graphics on so I could exactly duplicate the panel you left unpainted, but in the new color scheme... Say medium gray on the black (instead of white on 80's computer beige.)
You'd need a pretty smooth surface to do it, and you'd have consider the projector's value before spending $100 on getting a silkscreen made... But I'd still love to do it some time.

Most sign shops could fuax the look you are after using printable vinyl...
hit up the ladies at your local scrapbook store... My wife has a cutting plotter I bought her... I use if for graphics all the time... I think at the scrapbook store they even sell laserjet printable vinyl...

Thanks mate I was wondering what to do with that piece myself cause i could clean it off with metal polish, but that would take the wording off it too, and i still want that there. I havent put the steel mesh back in the top yet cause i was considering getting some vinyl decals cut to stick on it, then paint over that, peal the decals off and it should theoretically look just right.
Im not really bothered too much about the value of the projector, i got it for nothing, so im starting from a good position. I just put in some near new 07MS tubes i got from Curt for it, so itll look alot better picture wise, i quite like this projector so i would like to see it looking good all over. If i can make it look really good, i might think about doing something simular with the NEC 9PG in a few years time
