Hi all, I have an old sony 1041 which i love but wish to make the most of its resolution

I understand that the maximum this can resolve is 480i and that i should try and use discrete composite signals with separate sync lines.

My source material is Ypbpr from an apple tv (which you can set to 480i in its menu) as well as a skybox, so i need a convertor for the color space and different format. Does anybody know a good convertor, i read about a device from play-asia here
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-11z-49-en-70-1d2s.html

but there is some debate in various reviews about it working properly at 480i - anybody have experience about making the most from this type of projector with modern sources?

Really grateful for any help
thanks
jon

Jon,

What you're talking about is a component-to-RGB transcoder. The one you linked to would probably work, but it looks exactly like the one I had, and it was a bit of a POS. It would work, but I'm not sure it would be much toward your goal of getting the best image quality you possibly can from the AppleTV and into the 1041.

It's not cheap, but I'd recommend a Crescendo Systems RTC2000 - affectionately known around here as the "Kimcoder", after Kim the engineer designed it:

I just happen to have one that I'd make you a deal on if you were interested... Wink

The other option would be an HD Fury, but I don't know whether the AppleTV will run 480i over HDMI.

Check what lenses are on that set. I think they are TAC lenses, so a big improvement would be seen as well if you switched those to glass HD6 or HD 144/145 from the plastic TAC ones.
