Call me a sucker for a project. I found a PS3 60GB locally that has a yellow light of death.

Anyone know what the fix is? And yes I'm asking before I buy it. Wink

It seems like you need to find a different player...

You only need to replace the laser carriage. One place to get them is here below but you may find them cheaper. It's a fairly common failure for what is an extremely robust machine. Not as prevalent as the 360 RROD, but common to slot loaders.

Thanks Greg

What type of power supply does the PS3 use? Wht type of hard drive? Aparently this guy has no cables and there's no hard drive.

Guess I should ask him if the seal is broken on the unit.

Say Greg, didn't you buy some Xbox 360's that were "without seals"?

Jeremy, the PS3 hard drive is just a standard 2.5" (notebook) SATA drive. PSU's are supposedly universal 120/240v with standard IEC connector - is that what you're asking?

hey Analog
I know here in BC Best Buy was promoting upgrading your PS3 Hard drive to a 250g. The Geek Squad was doing it. Can't remember how much though.

Adding a hard drive to a PS3 is a no brainer. And you can get a 500GB laptop SATA drive for $100.

Yep. Since I've never paid attention to the PS3 before I wasn't sure. That and I was too tired to Google.

The owner got back to me. It's still available. I asked him for the model number to see what's what for replacement parts.

I hope you are getting this for no more than $100. If its without a hard drive and that you are going to spend $100 on a new laser transport and another $50-100 on a hard drive you could almost buy a new one and get a warranty and not risk theft item.

The PS3 owners manual even has step by step instructions on how to replace the hard drive with a larger one. Sony means for you to do it if you want. Nothing proprietary there.

I know. In fact, Sony chose the opposite in decision making that Microsoft did with the 360. Sony wants the user to tinker with the PS3, including loading another operating system onto it. And I'd much rather pay $100-110 for a 500GB drive for the PS3 than $135-150 for a 120Gb drive for the 360.

I found another one locally that just plain doesn't power up. It's a really good price. Anyone know where to get power supplies for these? Greg?

I thought updates were stored on the hard drive and not writing to an EPROM. Couldn't one simply remove the drive and see what happens?

not an easy fix usually. you have to connect it to a cable to program the bios chip on board usually. "JTAG" these days in most cases.
as it says a factory tool.
old times were you could pop out the eprom and program it but everything is embedded now

I bought a drive for my ps3 off ebay or should I say I had Kim buy it then ship it to me. Anyway, if I remember correctly it was about $100. I bought it as a spare because my ps3 crapped out too after an update but was fixed under warranty. My thinking was buy a spare drive while they're available so if it craps out again I can fix it then sell it and buy something thats more reliable if need be.

Walter,
A new drive, DVD or HD, would not help in that situation. bad update is a motherboard thing.

When mine went I had just played the kids dvd, then went to play a BR and the PS3 said it would need an update to play it. So I connected the net to it and downloaded the latest FW. After it was done and ready to go the damn thing wouldn't play any discs period.
Everything I read on the internet said it was a bad drive. OF course my first reaction was BS a FW update isn't going to screw the drive. I sent it in to Sony ( under warranty), they fixed it and returned it a week later, the service slip said they replaced the drive but oddly enough the FW had been set back to a previous version too. So was it a bad drive or just the FW and Sony said it was the drive. Yes I should have pulled it apart and secretly marked the drive to see if in fact it was the problem. And no the FW isn't on the HDD. There may be a jtag connection inside but that doesn't do you any good if you don't have the software to communicate with it and rewrite it.
