The main reason I switched to CRT from digital was the cost of replacement lamps. My first PJ was a Sharp that took a $500.00 lamp. I was blowing through 2 lamps a year. Shocked I was just looking at the cost of re-lamping a RS-2 and was surprised that they are only $288.00 for a OEM lamp and that was only a quick search. I think my days of buying tubes are over. Don't start jumping for joy quite yet as you are not getting rid of me that easy. I still have 9 rated tubes in my main 4600HD to burn up first. Wink

That's good, because that would probably be the first Ampro that lived longer than its tubes..Mr. Green

Laugh my friend, laugh. For the record, it's on it's second set of tubes and close to 15,000 hrs.Laughing
If anyone here should know it would be you, that a CRT projectors reliability is directly related to it's setup.

Chip I'll probably still have a complete set of the Thomas tubes with sony pinouts, i bought the remainder of them so I have 19 tubes now. I' will keep 12 for the blend and a re-tube. All you need to do is figure out how to mod the neck board.

I reviewed the RS2 for the HTF, not even close to CRT Wink

I am set to do the newest release as well, the DLA-HD750, supposedly a 20k bump from 30k to 50k contrast, we shall see Smile

I stole the #10 green out of my backup 4600 when my main green imploded. If those tubes produce as sharp a beam spot as you say, that would be a nice experiment. That projector is in the middle of a fun-time mod. I have started to mod the nose of it to take the better focus Marquee couplings but I'm one coupling short and now one green short.

Gary don't take this the wrong way but that's just your opinion. Many here have seen it and have stated they could live with it. I have not but do intend to. Personally, I'm tired of jumping through hoops to make the latest batch of source devices compatable with my analog projection devices. Last night I was looking at the size of my Crestron program just for the theater to work seamlessly with all the extra devices and it's just plain stupid. Wiring and programming could be cut by 75% just by going digital not to mention the cost of the extra devices. I'm looking forward to the day when I'll feel good about pulling the beastie off the ceiling. I'll not base that decision on one persons review.

yeah, thats why its called a review, it is my opinion, whos opinion do you want? someone who has lived with digital for 10 years Rolling Eyes

ask around Chip, all the hardcore CRT videophiles will agree with me 100% down the line Wink I could name them here but it wouldn't be right to call them out Very Happy

you want to go digital to streamline connections and reduce programming that you have already done? I am confused!!

why does everyone think they need others blessings to go digital?? If you like it, or can live with it...then get it. You don't have to convince anyone else...

"whos opinion do you want?"
The only opinion I trust, MINE. That's the only one I need and I'll have it when I get the chance to see one for my self. I don't have to ask who thinks I'm right or wrong because I just don't give a $hit what anyone thinks about my choice of display. If I did, I'd have bought into the must have a G-90 mentality a long time ago. If I did care about what others think, why would I have bought a AmPro?

Wow, that takes a h3ll of a lot of courage to say that. My main reason was black level and contrast ratio. To me, it is what gives an image a dynamic range (depth).

Twelve years ago I didn't know any better and digitals really sucked. Things have change alot in the digital world. I used to enjoy tinkering around with CRT's but it's getting old as is me. I do like the more film-like ability of the CRT but I'm not the only one in the house. I'd like to simplify the big screen experiance for all who live under this roof. I don't know how many people but Gary see's Gary's setup on a daily basis. In my house more people see mine then I do. I have a full time job that quite frequently ties me up for days at a time. I can't be there to tinker anymore.

I am about to endeavor into the black art of Remote control programming via a URC MX-3000 & MSC 400 master controller.

I don't see why or how my Moome MUX makes this any harder of a programming task??

Aspect ratio control is the only part I am worried about.

Ah, I can completely identify with this sentiment, but Chip, don't you know you get no love for a position like this? Wink

Dave your missing the point, Chip doesn't have time to tinker anymore is one thing he states, for others its the tinkerability, is this a word Confused , that draws them to CRT. Once I get sick of it i'll switch also and be done with it did I waste money on two blend units for the CRT's? NO !! I will use them with two digitals for CIH so i wont have to zoom and use lens's etc. Its all about enjoyment, if you enjoy spending any amount of money on CRT then do it, the same goes with Digital or any other thing that makes you happy. My dad spend tons of money on Lottery tickets sure I think its stupid but he thinks I am wasting money on electronics its all relavent.

I do not believe for one minute that the only reason why people buy CRTs is to tinker with them. Aside from being living proof of getting someone else to setup the goods, I am only concerned with black level and on/off CR. If that is achieved through an inexpensive 120" flat panel based on SED/FED or some other technology, its going to be considered.

Of course, I naively thought folks into CRT were mainly for the PQ aspects I am for. I never considered the primary aspect of CRTs being tinker-worthy entertainment. Smile
