Star Wars: The Musical

Man, Lucas is about as big of a sell out as one can be these days. I give it Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

Looking at the site, I wouldn't be so sure Lucas is involved other than giving tacit approval by not suing them. It looks like a fan creation, done almost 10 years ago.

You're right, Gary. That site (and several other fan creations) have been around a long time and Lucas, et al has nothing whatsoever to do with it.

Frankly, I'm glad Lucas doesn't try to shut down every fan thing. There are holders of other licenses that are draconian about their rights enforcement.

Hey Wan, did you think Robot Chicken is Lucas' creation also? Smile

Hey guys, I screwed up. While that site is what it is, its not really what I wanted to report on. Actually, they are coming out with a broadway play called Star Wars: The Musical.

OK, I did some googling... I think this is what you're referring to, since it was news yesterday and today:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7779011.stm

http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/stage/theatre/article5327739.ece

Quote:
Just when it appeared that George Lucas had finally laid to rest his epic saga of Jedis, Wookies and Ewoks, he has announced that Star Wars will return as a stadium experience.

The Times has learnt that Lucasfilm has authorised Star Wars: A Musical Journey, a retelling of the story that will combine excerpts of the film with live orchestral accompaniment.

Diehard fans may dream of Jedi Knights serenading Jabba the Hutt and C-3PO singing “Don’t cry for me, R2-D2” but they are likely to be disappointed. Producers for the show, which will have its world premiere in Britain, emphasised that although actors would be used to narrate the story, it would not be a stage musical.

The production, which condenses more than 13 hours of film into 90 minutes, will be more like a classical music concert performed in front of a cinema screen, 27m (90ft) wide.

Reading up on it, it's not a "broadway musical" at all. I wouldn't be interested in it in the slightest if it were, because I'm REALLY disinterested in the broadway musical genre, with very few exceptions. It sounds like an orchestra performance playing a special score set to some scenes from the films. It actullly sounds pretty awesome to me. John Williams' musical scores are arguably the best thing about the whole Star Wars franchise. In the HIGHLY unlikely event it came to Des Moines, I'd go see it.

Come on... A 90-foot wide screen playing Star Wars with the Royal Philharmonic playing a John Williams score? I'd be all over that.

Wasn't there an old SNL sketch where Bill Murry was a bad lounge singer and put lyrics to the Star Wars theme?

Edit: nevermind...I found it. BTW that's Paul Shafer of Late Night with David Letterman playing the piano.
