|
|
Ok, so I have a problem / decision to make. I have a 9500LC with both HD-10s and HD-10Ls (I have both sets). My new theater room has the scourge of theaters worldwide...a big fat HVAC duct and steel support beam running right through the middle of the room. With HD10s or HD10Ls, if I put the PJ in front of the duct, I'll have a screen about 75-80" wide. If I put it behind the duct, it'll be almost 12 feet wide! Neither of these options is really attractive, because I'd hoped for a screen about 8' wide.
I got to thinking, I know there are some short throw lenses out there, specifically HD215s (the lenses that come on the Barco Oynx/Zenith 1200). I don't know if these mate with the 9500LC C-elements, though? I know the 8500LC uses the HD10 family but from what I can gather, some 8" LC hardware is different. Can anyone shed some light on some short throw lens options?
Thanks!
Ben

Not much you can do, those are basically your choices. I have an 8500 and do a 12 foot screen and am happy with it, a 9 inch will look better for sure. the only other option if you want to go short throw is to get another PJ and blend then your PJ's will be closer to the screen and you can go to say 9 feet and have a super pic !
But I know a blend is not an option.
Is there no way to mount it right under the beam using it as the anchor for the mount? and it most likely be right above your first row, you might loose the middle seat in the second row to avoid the low mount of the beam.
I have the same beam but i have 10 foot ceilings

So I take it from your reply that HD215's, barco retro lenses, etc. cannot be used on a 9500LC?
10 foot ceilings! Lucky bastard I haven't measured yet but I would guess my ceilings are 8-8.5 ft.
Oddly enough, I have a second projector chassis, and if I wanted I could get more tubes from Antoine. It's the complexity of setup and the cost of the blending unit that prevents me from going that route. That, and *gasp* I don't care all that much if my scope presentation is smaller than 16:9
I have thought about mounting the PJ below the beam but I'm not sure I want to lose the third seat in the middle row...good suggestion though.

How about behind the beam, but with a false screen wall and AT screen to shorten the throw?

I am wondering this same thing myself, 80" wide screen here and would love to know opinions:
HD10
HD10 GT17
HD10L
HD10F
HFQ900
too many 9" options, me is confused

Spotmatic ended up using HD-10L lenses on his BR909 after trying most of the other lenses, I believe he also had a set of HFQ900's and settled on the 10L's as the sharpest for his ~70" wide screen.

thats what I was thinking, my small 80" wide screen might warrant the HD10L setup
I have heard a few guys trash the HD10Ls but they all were using them on 96" screens etc. , screen size makes are breaks a lens
thanks for the info

I think we've covered this a couple if times before but why not put the projector behind the duct and move the screen closer to the projector. This will allow you to have the 8' screen you want without changing you lenses
You could build a false wall to mount the screen on.

It is true that a false screen wall is a good option in conjunction with mounting the PJ behind the duct. However space is not exactly abundant in my house and I would like to keep the room as large as possible since there will be a bar area to the rear of the theater seating.
I do appreciate the different mounting and screenwall suggestions...but my driving question is still whether HD215s can be used on a 9500LC?? Or to put it another way, are the C-elements used in the LC Marquees the same as used on the LC 8" barcos (retro, onyx)??

I think as long as the lens is of the HD10 type the C-element for the Moarquees and Sonys that use the HD10's are ok. Kal has an LC zenith(Barco Onyx 8 inch) I think he should be able to tell us what lens he has on his. If its an HD 10 then the 215's might fit but not sure if they will work for that size screen(8') I think they were for smaller screens. Does the Lens threat here have any info on them?

The HD215 lenses won't work with the 9500LC, the C-elements are larger for the HD10 series of lenses.

OK, good to know. From what I could gather it sounded like the C-elements were different but I wasn't positive, thanks for confirming that.
In other news I was reading through the 8500LC/9500LC install manual posted on Curt's site(http://www.curtpalme.com/docs/ElectrohomeMarquee8500_9500_Install.pdf), and the throw formulas for HD10s and HD10Ls are different - very different!
HD10 - 1.25*W+6"
HD10L - 1.54*W+3.3"
Interesting - so according to the factory formulas (which are conservative, I know, but the difference between the two lenses should be valid), the throw distances for a 96" wide screen are as follows:
HD10 - 1.25*96+6 = 126"
HD10L - 1.54*96+3.3 = 151"
It was awhile ago since I switched to the HD10L's and I don't remember if the throw distance was different or not (it's floor mounted so it's easy to move). I'll try to pop one of my HD10's on tonight if I have time, but that's not likely, so it might have to wait until after the holiday. Does anyone have experience switching from 10's to 10L's or vice-versa?
Ben

I've tried HD10L, HD10, HD10-GT17 and HD10F lenses. The difference in throw distance is basically 0 for all of these lenses, the formula you posted is incorrect for the HD10L lenses. Look at the updated info in appendix B, here.
