The wife and I watched a damn good scary movie last night. It was DirecTV HD PPV, by the way, which looked pretty decent with the new MPEG4 stuff. The $4.99 cost was about the same as Blockbuster, but we didn't have to drive there! Just turned the Netflix sub back on so we'll be watching more BD's...
Anyway, it's frickin' awesome if you're into the spooky, freaky, chilling type of scary movie (as opposed to the blood, guts and gore type of scary movie ala Saw). It's called The Strangers. Liv Tyler and a guy play a couple that stays overnight at the family's summer home out in the sticks after leaving a friend's wedding. The story may be slightly weak (this IS the horror genre we're talking about), but the acting is good. The best part, though is the editing and sound. The visuals are awesome. It's all low-tech... LOTS of darkness.
It's classic scary movie stuff. There's no whiz-bang CGI or flying animated anything. The credits said there was some compositing, but I didn't see any. In a lot of ways, it's like a 60's movie. Even the house has a late-60's feel.
The music and sound mixing were the best part, though. It was so good, now I wish I'd watched it on BD to experience the DTS Master Audio track instead of the certainly over-compressed AC-3 track in the DirecTV PPV feed. As good it was on DirecTV though, I'm sure the Blu-ray would be phenomenal.
Here's the review on BD Digest:

I'm not sure about the reviewer, though. Either he's really dense or didn't pay attention at all, because he got a MAJOR detail about the story line completely wrong. It was just in the set-up, but it still makes me wonder.
Anyway, if you like chilling, scary, non-slasher, non-cheesy type horror, this is a must watch. Two thumbs up.
