I'm not at liberty to discuss what has been going on between me and Moome. But what I can say is, a lot of testing was done over the past two months with these cards by both Moome, myself and one other person. So much so, that even if you ran the cards using batteries (totally noiseless supply), you would not see a difference in the image. |
So I am the other person. I identified an issue with the card and Mike and I discussed it. I presented data to Mike. Mike in turn designed a circuit to fix the issue. He shared the modification with me and I applied it to a Sony version I have here of the FULLHD. The changes fixed the specific problems that I identified and I have data to support it.
Walt, I will say for sure that what Mike and I worked on has nothing to do with gamma or pedestal. It is unrelated and a separate mod. The mod Mike and I worked on was related to bandwidth. Here are some images before and after Mikes basic mods showing a 1080p 60Hz burst.

As you can see, there was terrible attenuation before and now there is none in the card.

Its difficult to tell Drag but if you look at the bottom left 1:1 on the before its not as bright, on the after its brighter. That is what TSE's peaking circuit looks like when you adjust the trim pot. when you get it just right the one box springs to life , if you go too much you get a redish color shift in the 1:1 patterns. Although it seems the vertical lines lost some sharpness while giving sharpness to the horizontal. ???
I should be getting a test sample from Moome of his new marquee VIM-HD when they are ready so I'll be able to
see first hand.

You don't see a totally different frequency response between the before and after? Look at the 1:1 1080p burst. Before it is dim and after it is bright. All frequencies should show full response and be equally bright. The burst is attenuated before the mods and is fully resolved after the mods.

Also, those photos are not the best because I didn't use a tripod so I might have shaken the camera while taking them
Another note, I was holding my camera at 180 degrees so the horizontal and vertical are swapped. I didn't want to edit the photos to rotate them with software after I took them because I didn't want to ad artifacts to the image due to an edit. Those are unedited and the only artifacts will have come from the JPG conversion.

Here is an image for the less astute observer
I took the RGB images from above, rotated them to the proper orientation, and cut out only the 1:1 part of the burst. Again this 1:1 1080p 60Hz, and the images are otherwise unedited.

it does look like there's some roll-off in horizontal? Vertical looks much better though,

Actually, it is my hand shaking slightly when I took the photo that makes the lines appear softer on the modded board. This is a shot on the screen, so the projected light level for the camera was kinda low and my camera kind stinks. If I had put the camera on a tripod, the vertical and horizontal lines in the modded burst would have looked as sharp as the horizontal lines on the unmodded board.
I took three photos before and after the mod, then just picked the clearest of the three. My hand was just steadier for the unmodified shot that I took first. I think the most important information to take from the photos is how much brighter the vertical 1:1 got after the mod.
...and just in case you are wondering, there is NO ringing at all from the board

That pattern looks really good Craig. I would've had the gamma board finished by now, but had to go on the road this week. Will finish it up tomorrow tough.
| Nashou66 wrote: | Yepp I knew they were rotated. it does look though there was some give and take on vertical and Horizontal on sharpness, in the end it evened out for more even bandwidth as you san tell the horizontal lines are over attenuated possibly giving a false sense of sharpness. Am i somewhat correct Craig?
Athanasios(Tom) |
The horizontal part of that pattern represents FOCUS (or camera) more so than bandwidth or attenuation. It's the vertical lines that determine where things are bandwidth wise, and the attenuation would show up with the lines being DARKER and smeared or blurry.
It's best to use the horizontal lines for reference (along with the vertical) for when the projector is setup properly for this test.
A well setup projector that's not really capable of resolving the bandwidth put into it, could easily show the horizontal lines perfectly, but it will never do the same with the vertical lines, mainly because they are what challenges the horizontal scan and that's what determines the bandwidth capability.

Introducting the latest version of Moome's HDMI card for Marquee CRT projectors: The VIM-FULLHD v2!
The new version 2 card includes special Mike Parker improvements for greater sharpness, higher bandwidth, less noise, and more!
Currently on sale as well but only for the first 10 orders (ships late October).
See the order page for full details: http://www.curtpalme.com/VIM-FULLHD.shtm
How does the new VIM-FULLHD version 2 card compare to the original?
Complete information on the changes can be found in the Moome v2 card comparison document (PDF format). Below is a quick summary:
Gamma: Improved Gamma for more linear greyscale (changes suggested by Walter/WTS)
Sharpness: Sharper Image (changes suggested by Mike Parker)
Picture purity: Cleaner/Less noise (changes suggested by Mike Parker)
Super White: Now Supports Super White for higher dynamic range
Stability: ESD enhanced to prevent electrostatic discharge
Manual
The VIM-FULLHD v2 user manual/data sheet can be found here. (PDF format)
Reviews/Testimonials
"Moome's original design squashed (attenuated) 65% of the full bandwidth when running 1080p 60Hz. With Mike's new circuit, the FULLHD v2 now can resolve the entire 1080p 60Hz signal. With Moome's new design his card is the first and only option that can do full 1080p and YCbCr... the image is amazing!" - Craig Rounds, official FULLHD v2 tester, professional calibrator (www.cir-engineering.com)
