Hi all,
I am a total newbie.
I have an NEC XG-751G it was working fine.
I connected it to my PC with a cable converting VGA output to 5BNC.
It no longer works with the 5BNC input coming out of the NEC switcher (it does work OK via the S Video input).

Have I killed the machine?
Any tips on what to check to get it working again?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Paul

Connect the PC directly to the XG, leave the switcher out of it for now.

Set the PC on something "normal" like 1024x768 at 60z - use a CRT monitor first.

Fire up the XG, plug in the PC. Press 1 (or 2 or 3, I forget exactly) to switch the XG to the RGBHV (VGA) input.

Hi I tried this, still not working

I now get blue lines running down the screen and the words **UNREGISTERED SIGNAL!!**.

I don't know if this helps but when I take Input from the Operate Menu I get

No Name Source Input
01 Pal 4x3 RGB A

Any other clues or pointers would be appreciated.

Are you sure you have the H and V sync plugs the right way round on the BNC cable?

See if you can create a memory slot for the res.

If not, then I think the unit has a bad oscillator board, or maybe system board. Hard to say without seeing it.

Hi Mark,
Thanks again for assistance.
I have tried the H and V cables both ways

I have re-read the manual a few times now.
I cannot work out how to create a new memory slot.

Does anybody know of any good techs in Sydney?

Even if is says unregistered signal, you should still have a synced picture. Is there any pic at all?

I get a scrambled picture that turns off and on.
I can hear something click in every now and then and the fan speeds up.

It works fine on the S video input.

I have tried the following

1680 x 1050 32 bit
1024 x 728
800 x 600
640 x 480

and whatever the NEC splitter uses

Try creating a new memory input like suggested. I'm curious if it locks onto the signal even if not synced. A non synced pic is usually various wavy colored lines, not just blue lines. If it locks onto the signal but is still not synced, select a test pattern and see if that is synced or not.

It sounds broken to me.

Oscillator board or System board.

Are there any errors codes on the back (turn the error code display on with the little button next to it)?

I'll agree it looks like a board issue but from what I've seen, if it wont sync a pic, it usually wont display unregistered signal either. This may help determine which board is the problem. Thats why I'm interested in more testing by him.

Also I'm pretty sure it wont display error codes unless it goes into shutdown and he hasn't indicated its shutting down.

Did you have it working at one time with the 5BNC and then it stopped? Have you tried another source with the RGBHV?

Yes it was working with 5BNC.

I bought a cable VGA at one end and 5BNC at the other and then connected it to my PC. This never worked.

I did get a picture from the PC using the RGB thru on the NEC Scan Converter (IDC-3000) I think this was before I tried the direct connection with the VGA to 5 BNC conversion cable.

I have also plugged a Moome XG FULLHD HDMI card in Slot B. (I have not been able to get this going).

I am also not sure that I have what is needed to check the setup. I only have the basic remote. I think I need the full setup remote OR to get the cable to use the PC software as the remote.

I still get a picture with the S Video input on Slot A (next to the 5BNC).

One thing seems odd to me when I select the source option page 1 says

Name: (blank)
Input Terminal: INPUT A
INPUT SOURCE (blank)
VIDEO MODE RGB
FREQUENCY fh=14.92 Hz
fv= 34.22 Hz
SYNC POLARITY HD(+) VD(+)

These frequencies seem a bit on the low side to me, I would not have a clue if the other settings are Ok either.
I also cannot see how to change these or add/delete memory locations (as suggested earlier).

I hope some of this makes more sense to you than I

It sounds like you are not swapping inputs. You should be able to do that with the User Remote - you should have told us that earlier.

But without the Setup remote or PC cable, you are not going to get much further.

Sorry Guys, I am only just working out what I do have, do not have and what I need.
I am working on sourcing a PC cable and will have another go at it.

I am reasonably sure I have swapped the inputs.
When it was working, pressing 1 made it work thru 5BNC & pressing 3 made it work thru the S video input.
Now I get the intermittent scrambled picture when I press 1 and I get a viewable (but lower quality) picture when I press 3.
I am pretty confident Input 3 is S video because it doesn't work when S video cable is not plugged directly into the pj's S video input.

Yep, you are swapping inputs correctly.

I think you have a bad oscillator board.

I have a spare you could test it with. But it is not a permanent solution, I want it back - it's my spare, not for sale.

I am about to stick it in my 751 chassis to see if it turns it into an 1101 with a 110khz max scanrate - over the next few days.. After I've done that test, you could borrow it.

Thanks for the offer.
It may be beyond my capabilities to install & test.
Do you know of any good techs in Sydney? I may need to call in the cavalry.

Assuming it is the oscillator board do you know if putting the Moome NEC XG FULLHD card into slot B or C bypasses the problem?
If so this may be my best plan of attack.
I already have the card but haven't got it working yet.
