It's a P4 3Ghz 800Mhz FSB running 1GB memory.
Do you really need a scaler for a standalone Blue Ray player? |
I wouldn't be confident that Blu-ray would work on that PC, do you have H/W accelation on your video card?
Most of us are using at least a 2.4ghz dual core system with 2+ gigs of ram and a video card with H/W acceleration
I'm not sure if you need a scaler, if it outputs 1080p60 and doesn't have timing issues I would run it straight into the G70) do you have a digital input? |
I have hardware acceleration on the card (old Radeon 9800Pro 256MB). Output is DVI direct to the PJ. |
This card doesn't accelerate HD video. It'll do an ok job with 3D games and SD video though. I have one in my 2004 HTPC.

What cards are out there with hardware acceleration for HD video?
I don't think my MB has PCI-E either

I know the ATi 24-2600 cards are H/W accelerated, not sure what the best cards are right now, I haven't looked into this kind of stuff in a couple monthes
Honestly you may be best of with a new PC in the long run, a P4 is getting a bit old in the tooth
I would have a look here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=940972&page=85

That's a cool link?
But I wanted to avoid adding another PC to the pile I already have.
Resistance is futile!

If you overclock your P4 3Ghz 800Mhz FSB running 1GB memory you will be on the edge of being able to run BluRay using PowerDVD. TMT uses more CPU so I doubt that will work. You will also need to get a good video card. You can try your 9800 and see if it works. You will also need to run AnyDVDHD in the tray to strip off HDCP which will also help.
Those P4 3.0's are pretty easy to get a 10% overclock. Just watch the CPU temp as you overclock. You are still going to be ragged edge.
As stated above most are using dual cores for BluRay. I dare say that you could pick up a GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI (no video card required as the onboard HD3200 video works great), and AMD X2 5600+ and 2G DDR2 memory for under $200 and have a good BluRay playback system. A bit more for a Phenom processor.
Heck on mine I have an AMD X2 4400+ on an older 939 MB, 2G Ram and run TMT under Vista Media Center without issues for BluRay.
It's the dual core that seems to run HD DVD and BluRay better than single core. And I have tried with the P4 3.0's many times.

Terry,
That is what I thought.
As far an OS is XP(MCE2005) BluRay compatable or do I need to upgrade the OS also?

Question for Terry (or anyone else who knows the answer). I have a dual core system but with only an older Gforce 7800. I never pursued a blu ray drive because I already have a stand alone blu ray player. But I noticed blank blu ray media has fallen to around $5/disc and it is starting to be tempting to reburn multi disc HD movies onto 1 blu ray disc.
If I bought a drive for my dual core system, would I be able to play ordinary ts or tp files (not encrypted in any way) I have burned myself onto blank media? Or I would I have to invest in a better video card?
Does anyone have a feel for how much cheaper the blu ray blank media might become or has it leveled off for a while?

I'm not sure how to answer this question, but let me see if I'm on the right track.
After rerading the question, I don't for sure know the answer, but I am assuming the answer is yes.
As far as a video card is concerned, if you have PCIx, then an 8600GT w/512M & HDCP can be had pretty cheap these days and would give you BluRay playback on your HTPC.
Your 7800 should handle TS files fine.

Hell, I'm still trying to figure out what a "BlueRay" drive is.

Terry,
I would suggest that the first check should be:
Do you have a PCIe 2.0 slot MB - if so go with a 9800GT
honestly even if you have a PCIe 1.0 MB - get the 2.0 card - as it will work with either. no need to lack you self into a slower speed card.
I have used both - the 8600 and 9800 - the 9800 is a much better card for a little bit more. The 8600 will NOT SLI configure - it is buggy.
