Would a G70 be a good option? Anything to look out for on them? I found one locally, need to see it and make sure it checks out ok.

The guy isn't keen to ship it so he might be more willing to negotiate a little more for local pickup. Laughing

A local G70 is a good option, but it really depends on the condition of the tubes.

We all know how it works, just to inform the newbie.

If you're buying a surplus set off someplace like Craigslist or eBay, chances are about 1 in 10 that the set is mint, or in good usable shape. With sets now typically being 10+ years old, even the hour counter is pretty useless. Some are easily reset (NEC), others roll over to 0000 at 9999. Parts can age/fail even if the set is new old stock with 100 hours on it.

I recently had a NOS board sold by someone else to a customer be bad out of the box, bad capacitors in a number of areas of the board.

While I can't guarantee 100% long term performance on a 10 year old set either, I do go through the sets, confirm all functions, calibrate things where required like Barco power supplies, and always change at least a dozen parts in a chassis that typically fail.

In the rare case that something does die in a set in transit or shortly after it's installed, I've got duplicate chassis/modules out the wazoo at this point, and can provide after sales service. That's why my set prices are more expensive than an as is one.

Just something to consider. If a $500 set needs $1000 worth of tubes, all of a sudden it's not a good deal any more..

The local G70 has about 4k hours on the chassis and tubes and the guy wants more than my budget allows for. He is sending me pics of the tubes and more info tonight.

I prefer a local option so I can see and touch (so to speak) the PJ.

Curt I will keep you in mind, want to see what is available locally first though.

The local G70 is way overpriced and the tubes look a 10 year old grill, lots of burn in. He wants $1800 and the burn in is enough to have the tubes replaced.

Id get a MArquee from Curt, an 8000 would be a nice start, then you can just upgrade it part by part or trade up to a 8500.

Tubes, tubes, tubes! Make sure whatever you buy has perfect tubes. The market is getting to the point that anything less than a 9" PJ is worth pretty much nothing if it needs tubes as the cost of re-tubing is pretty much the worth of the PJ (heck, even a 9" is kind of questionable).

did you tell him to put down the crack pipe and slowly back away? Laughing
That machine is worth $400. in parts for someone smart enough to disassemble it and identify the different modules.

I would give him about $200 and use it as a conversation piece on a table.. the case might be worth more than that though. Smile

no it's not, I have a couple of nice cases here and listed them for $100. each with no takers. It's kind of odd really, you would expect a large piece of fragile plastic like that to be in demand from shipping accidents?

That is why I said "might".. I have seen quite a few PJs with scratched cases and a clean unscratched one would be nice cosmetic improvement. Then again in a hush box, who would care.

I think this is the 3rd or 4th time you've said this to me about various items, it's like CRT Groundhog Day. Laughing
