I am debating between a 1272 and a D50. I can get a 1272 with mount, remotes, new tubes and lenses (not rebuilt) with a 100" fixed screen (and some other items) for about $1k. A D50 with 3k or so hours for about $300-600 on eBay.

I will be using it 2-3 hours per day on average. I know they are both very comparible with what they can handle. I use to own a 722 (pre-HD days) that was very reliable, so looking at Sony again. Plus there seems to be good or better part availability for the Sony PJs.

I will have HDMI and component input devices. I don't have any 1080P devices at the moment, so 1080i and 720P will be fine.

It looks like the HDMI cards are compatible with either PJ.

I have a budget of under 1k for the PJ to get started. Would like a 1292, G70 or G90, but that would most likely put me over budget.

I would NOT pay 1k for a 12xx Sony unless the screen is really worthwile like a ST130. Curt Palme will sell you a 12xx for between 4-600 with a warrenty.

In addition, a 3K hour D50 most likely will need tubes. You most likely want a minty NEC PG set, far better than either the D50 or 1272. I can get you into one of those for around $1k.

I don't know about the D50, but the 1272 with new tubes should give you a good picture.

It also kinda depends on what you have seen (or viewed) as far as CRT projectors go. I thought I had a great picture on my 1272 until I got a NEC 6PG XTRA (thanks Cliff) and it's a whole new world now!

The Sony 1272 does not deliver the picture as does the NEC, but the Sony is a 'piece-of-cake" to set-up.

Whatever your decision, you really must consider Curt as a source for CRT projectors. Thumbs Up

Go for an EM machine if you can. I found the difference in sharpness between my 1270 and Nec 6pg to be significant.

Is that Sony the one on ebay with the crazy ad? Ebay listings like can be questionable.

Yes it was the one on eBay with the crazy ad. I will look at some of the other ones on the PJ ranking list.

I would prefer to be under $500 to keep the wife/CFO happy. It isn't an urgent need/want, just starting to consider it again.

The D50 was on my to buy list back in about 2000, but decided against it at the time due to the price for a new one.

Which PJ will give me the best bang for the buck? I have an Olevia 37" LCD at the moment and the picture is quite good on it with HD content, just want something larger and would rather go with front PJ CRT.

I think the one I was looking at had the built in doubler and was $15-20k. It has been 8 years, so I may be wrong.

I got a 1252 with a 100" screen for $200. It had about 3000 hours on it, so not new. A grand is way to much in my opinion; even if new.

I could be happy with a 1252/1272/PG or similar. It would be a way back into a decent setup at a good price point. I just want to keep the flying objects Rolling Eyes

from the wife at a minimum while slowly moving to a new setup. Once she is hooked again, then the upgrade will be easier.

As hard as this is to say, I miss my VPH-722 that I had 1999-2002. It wasn't HD pretty, but did a decent job for satellite and movies over s-video and composite. That was before HD was available, so it probably would make me sick to look at now.

That $1k 12xx is a ripoff supremo. If that crazy ebay ad is the one I'm thinking of, the dude is claiming perfect 1080p out of it, which is just impossible - and thus throws extreme doubt on any of his other claims. He might even escape negative feedback - anyone experienced with CRTs will stay away, and someone inexperienced may either not notice the difference or chalk it up to inexperience.

Stay away.

I second getting an EM PJ. I've run both a reasonably good 1271 and a BG808s, and the 808s smokes the 1271 at least as much as the 1271 would smoke the aforementioned Olevia. Smile

I thought something look strange on that auction.. Some of the info didn't match the specs and the info was not very clear, left a lot of room for the seller to wiggle with.

I am in Atlanta, GA. I have been looking on Craigslist and local advertising methods, most are over priced IMHO.

I got a near complete BG 808 (needs Green/Blue tube & amp drivers) you can have for $250.

It is not a complete unit and would require you to ge the other parts to make a working projector so it might be beyond a newbie.

A newbie would probably be better off with a complete unit from Curt (IMO) not a WIP (reverse sales technique).
