What will we all do when the last crt fades into eternal nothingness?. Would it be profitable to manufacture replacement tubes for all the die hard CRTs out there, is there a big enough market for them?. I just hate to see it all fade away.

It would be the end of civilisation as we know it. CRT owners unite, and form a group that wants to destroy every last digital pj. We will eat the flesh of our victims (the crappy digital pj owners, not the pjs)!

It will fade away and it won't matter.

It will not be worth buying a set of tubes. Heck, it is not worth buying a new set of LC tubes now. The current state of the world is that in all usability aspects (size, noise level, installation flexibility, etc) and many picture quality aspects (the general exception being dynamic range and absolute black level), the current crop of digitals exceed CRTs. Further, digitals are available that actually do match or exceed the CRT in every important respect (for instance the JVC RS2). Given that such a projector costs just a bit more than a full set of LC tubes, re-tubing a projector even today is arguably a losing proposition. In the not too distant future there will be no argument--there will be no reason to retube a PJ.

Yes, there may be a soft spot for old tech, but how many pine away for the horse and buggy days. By the time you move on, you won't care.

The last consumer of new tubes will be the simulator market, IMO, notably those military simulators that must work at very low light outputs for night-vision training.

I spent some quality time with my XG last night. Every time I think I'm ready to throw in the towel on CRT I get pulled back in by just how realistic and film like the image is. The only thing negative I can say about my current setup is that I know I will never get CIH out of my CRT projector. I know you are working on some good information over in the digital forum Dave. The simplicity of a digital projector and the virtual "plug and play" setup is very appealing when I'm having problems with my CRT. Fortunately, those problems have been few and far between and I have been fortunate enough to enjoy many trouble free hours with my projector. I can't imagine any digital projector looking better than what I am seeing out of my XG. I know that there is "better" out there but I think that I and my friends/family would be hard pressed to tell a difference. I'm going to run my CRT for as long as it's economically feasible for me. Considering that I have invested less money in what I have than the cost of a single digital bulb, I think I'm getting a good return on my investment. When the day comes that I have to pull my CRT off the ceiling and replace it with something digital, I will have no regrets and will move wholeheartedly into that technology. There really are no downsides to this hobby for me. I'm happy with what I have and I know that I will be happy with whatever I buy next because I will have put the time and effort into researching it and buying the best that I can comfortably afford.

We will go digital.

I saw a properly set up JVC RS2 a couple of nights ago being driven from Blu-ray/HD DVD through a RadianceXD to tame the overly saturated primaries.

I came away happy knowing that there are digitals out there that I could happily live with. It's last year's model too. The RS10 and RS20 are due out very soon.

There will likely be niche markets for CRT for a long time (planetariums, simulation, etc) but HT use isn't one of them.

And I don't disagree. Have you had some friends bring over an RS2 or other very good 1080p digi to compare though. If well set up, you might be surprised.

When Guy went from the XG to the H79, he admitted there were compromises. When he started pulling out XGs and replacing them with RS2s he said (and I think this is a quote), "the RS2 is better than every single XG I've pulled out."

Now, is the XG still a great bargain at a quarter the cost of an RS2? Yep. But my point is, a picture better than an RS2 will likely be about the cost of a new set of tubes when you need to replace them. So why in the hell would you bother replacing them?!?!?

You really should consider CIA. I would do CIA with a CRT in a heartbeat.

In many respects I agree. But, think about it, just as that goes for a picture that is 10% better, it also goes for a picture that is 10% worse.

And that was my point!

If you have a top end CRT running well set up, there is little compelling reason to upgrade. And you further summed up what I was saying by stating:

Yes, which is the answer to OP: you won't really mind when CRTs fade into the nether regions.

I'm hoping to go from a huge CRT to an LED/ Laser projector the size of an IPod and skipping the current bulb projectors altogether. Thankfully, I have a long time to wait before they get that technology up to snuff, but when it happens, I'll be waiting.

Don't get me wrong, I love the old beast, but it's almost 14 years old. I've never had a TV make it past 10. I know CRT projector days are numbered as far as HT go. I just hope it hangs in there for as long as possible. While digitals make more and more improvements, we sit back at watch our good ol' CRT's. When digitals finally get to a reliablility, picture quality and price we can all find appealing, we'll switch.

I might change my mind if I were to get my hands on a brand new 9500lc though... Twisted Evil

I wonder who will go digital first, me or Pete. Rolling Eyes
I guess it depends on who's projector $hits the bed first, his Barco or my AmPro Wink Razz Razz Razz

Me too, though probably not iPod sized.

1080p digitals don't have the screen-door problems we used to laugh at. LED DLP projectors wouldn't have rainbows, convergence problems, heat degradation, or other traditional digital issues. As long as they get the colors right, they should be killer.

In fact I'd trade my CRT right now for a good LED projector, for one reason: ANSI contrast. That bothers me more than absolute fade-to-black on/off contrast.

But these days I have no time to watch the CRT I already have, so there's no point in spending money on a new projector. Maybe when my kids are off at college...

They say our sun will eventually burn out but I'm not worrying too much about that either.

One thing I might point out though, is that even though technology generally improves over time, quality always goes the other way. Thats because instead of using technology to improve a product it is mostly used for making it cheaper. Technology does not fix greed.

For example, I would much rather buy a NOS 30 year old wash machine like my parents still use than the crap found today.

Smile

I have made a similar decision.
When we sell the house and build the new one (HT built in) it will have a Digital Projector in it.

The cost advantage used to be on the side of CRTs - that is gone now. Its sad when bulbs cost less than tubes.

10x275 = 2750 (life 2-3k hours each)

3x1200 = 3600 (life 5-8k hours) (2x if you keep the red)

A CRT projector tubes at over 10k hours has lost most (if not all) of the razor sharpness of the 1-3k hour tubes.
The bulbs just lose brightness not sharpness.

So I would say it a good bit more favorable for the digital at this point than retubing a CRT. But that is my opinion.

That is an inaccurate and gross over simplification. There are many products where quality improves over time. One simple example is your car's tires. There are many many more examples.
