I have been using a Momitsu dvd player via RGB on my Sony 1272
For some reason the dvd player won't load a disc anymore.
Can it be repaired? Or should I buy a new Momitsu?
Are there other brands I could buy instead that have a rgbvh hook up like the momitsu? Thanks

With the cost of labour its usually cheaper to replace DVD players than getting one repaired.
Smaller text please you don'r need to shout

Since its not currently working you have nothing to loose. remove the cover and locate the the laser lens. Get some glass cleaner and a Q tip. Wet the Qtip with the glass cleaner and rub the laser lens with it. You can rub fairly well just dont press real hard. Then use the dry end to wipe off the excess. Use another dry Qtip if you need to dry it some more. Now try it again but put the cover back on first. Sometimes room light will affect the laser reading which is why the cover needs to be on. Good luck
P.S. I like that macgyver guy............

Good advice. DOn't know if this works for DVDs, but I used to tweak the laser current on CD players to tweak them for a couple of months more life. THere's usually a trimpot right on the side of the laser that controls the current. Do the later models have that, I did this 10ish years ago.
A CD tech for Sony once told me that usually it's the optical photocells that die out, not the laser itself. Dunno if that's true. Do the cleaning route first like repairguy says though before you mess with the rest of it.
Of the 6 DVD players that I have gone through on the bench (the current $99 Panasonic has survived 3 years of almost 24/7 use!), all had bad lasers and were repaired under warranty at least once.

Momsitu's have loader issues. Especially certain models. There were multiple thread on AVS about changing the loader (the actual DVD tray & laser assembly). I bet those threads are archived by now but you can find them in the archives. I don't know if any of the replacement loaders are still available. If you can't find the threads, let me know and I'll help search for them.

Thanks for the advice.
If I need a new player, are there any other brands of players similar or better than the Momitsu?
It's hasn't had that much use & I'd rather try a different brand

Not sure that you'll find a name brand DVD player with RGBHV out. I've seen no name brands have them, the last one I had here was a Citizen.
Why not spring for a transcoder or a Fury, get an upconverting DVD player with HDMI output? I'm sure you'll get a better image.

Lots and lots better these days. But, as Curt said, there is no decent one with RGB out. If you want RGB and only DVD, a cheap HTPC is probably your best bet.
I would not invest too much money in a 1272 with things like HDMI converters and such unless you really plan to upgrade the PJ. If you are going to go digital some day, you could go now and save the expense of an HDMI converter and get a darn good image pretty cheap. YMMV.

I have an up-scaling Helios 4000 DVD player with RGB out, it's complete and comes with original box, packing, remote, etc. If you need it I'll take $110. including fed ex ground delivery.

You can replace the internal drive without problems. Just a standard p-ata ide drive (a region free one comes handy) I replaced one on my own momitsu, it workes good. Not every drive fits perfectly, but on the avsforum where a lot of threads of good working models.
By the way, almost everyone has old dvd drives lying around in old pc's or the closet.
