I was wondering what this anamorphic squeeze mod was all about. Apparently without doing this mod, my Marquee 8000 will not be able to have a 16x9 raster? Is this hard to do?

From a low tech guy with an 81110 Marquee who has not done the mod in the 3 or so years of owning the pj; its not something critical to do right away.

I don't use full vertical size adjustment (down to 0) - I end up around 6-10% and the 16:9 looks fine for me.

I realize I am driving circuits harder than needed because of this; and perhaps the mod is not that difficult; but getting your projector working and set up in anamorphic (perhaps just a little short of full 16:9 squeeze - could depend on specific pj) does not require the mod.

Okay, so I guess I'll see if my pj is able to do the right raster size once it's working. I guess then I'll know if I need to do the mod.

By the way Athanasios, is this the right part you were referring to?

"that mod is commonly known as "vertical squeeze mod" it decreases the vertical size for 16:9 operation. I think you're right that the circuit was probably designed more for computer presentation.

The mod requires the replacement of 3 resistors on the vertical board (R704, R804 and R904). These resistors are 30K ohm, they should be replaced with 56K ohm resistors, and it's best to use metal film resistors @ 1 to 5% tolerance. I use 1% 1/4 watt from Digikey.com:

yepp thats it but the part number might not be right, Mouser and newark are my first choice for parts. Newark is great a few times i ordered the wrong parts and they just told me to keep them and they sent out new the right ones at no cost, and I made the mistake !!!!

I am sorry but I have no experience in modding. What exactly will I need to do this? Do you think it's doable for a newbie?

Well if you can do some basic soldering its not hard , but if you have some old electronic parts you can pratice removing resisitors from and then putting them back on id do that first, its how i got started two years ago. Then when you feel comfortable you can do it to your own boards on the PJ. But I warn you, you could become adicted! I have .
A basice soldering iron of like 15-30 watt type and some soldering wire and some desoldering braid to suck up the solder off the board. do a search for soldering tecniques on the web, lot of info.

Desoldering braid is a MUST. It turns next-to-impossible into dead easy. Don't even try without it.

Can you get all of that stuff from Radio Shack? I guess the replacement resister/parts need to be ordered online though.
