Guys...I posted a question about my new neighbors old 8500 before and can't remember where I left off with that, but he came over asking if I had found an answer yet. I suppose I could search my posts and revive that, but I'd like a fresh take on the problem.

That said, the problem is he has to periodically 'repair' the focus. He said it appears to require adjustment every half hour or so. However, when the set is first turned on (set in powered shutdown mode) the first re-focus is up to an hour in. Then the time shortens to about every half hour. He said sometimes the image would flash black when it happened but most of the time not. I hate the 'sometimes' word with a passion as I'm sure all of you do. Evil or Very Mad

Thanks guys. The phones are now open for opinions. Rolling Eyes

Focus Board problem. Most likely it good be going bad and that is very rare. It also could be either the CLM or the VDM as they also send focus waveforms to the FCM. If you had another FCM to swap that be the first step.

When he says Flash back, does it mean it goes out of focus and gets smaller? that sounds like a HVPS issue.

No it flashes BLACK, as in no image whatsoever, and then the image returns almost immediately full size, same convergence....except every time it happens he either has to ramp up focus to ~48 or down to ~34 to correct it.

Thanks for the reply. Thumbs Up When I get home tonight I'll haul my boards over there. As for F board failures...rare? I don't know what version is the best but I've read for years about failed F boards long before anything else takes a dump.

Thanks again. I'll report back what we find.

Thanks for the reply Tim. Always a pleasure.

Arcing...bummer. I saw the pj when it blipped real fast and the focus changed but I didn't hear anything. It's ceiling mounted and I was right under it with the cover off. I don't suppose I necessarily would hear a zap. I'll inspect the HV leads with a jewlers loupe for any pin holes, etc. As far as the HVPS I guess I'll pony up mine ( Shocked ) to rule that out. Good thing this guy is rich. I'll have all new stuff if his pj eats anything. Either that or there'll be sum feuden and a fighten going on on that thar street til he ponies up. Wink

Thanks again Tim. I'll post back my results.
