What do you think? Its my spare CLM that I just aquired.

Not tried it yet but it looks like its only the plastic corner of U16 thats broken, the actual chip looks intact and is touching all the contacts (you can see an exposed contact at right-side) I might just silicon it just to hold it in place and maintain tension so that the contacts have a good tight connection but otherwise, do you think the CLM will work ok?

Also, guess what I've got.............. http://tinyurl.com/4nzhat - Look closely, its an 03 VIM and it works - YIPPEEEEE!!!!!!

Use your DMM to check the continuity between the chip pin and the board. What I worry about when I see something like that is whether or not the board has been abused in some other way as well.

Great idea Craig! I've got a DMM so I'll put it to good use. I think the board got damaged in transit but I've been going over it today looking at it closely and cleaning all the chips and reseating them etc - appears to be in good shape other than the bust socket. Thats the problem with buying off EBay though, you never know what the other guy has really been up to until you finally get the item into your own hands - luckily the VIM is in great shape, the CLM looks wounded but recoverable but as for the VNB I also got, well, its probably trashed for sure (hard to see under all the soot its covered in Shocked )

I'd say from the pic it looks like the socket was broken bye someone trying to remove the chip for cleaning. see the scrape up the actual chip, I know be cause i have done the same to the older CLMs when i first got an M8000 .

Hmmm, you might be right Athanasios, the broken bits of plastic I dug out of the box the board came in don't look as if they came from the busted socket. None of the other chips look to have been tampered with if that is indeed what happened. Neither is anything else broken so I'm not quite sure whats going on here. Still not tested it yet, if it works I'm happy, if it doesn't then, well, not much I can do I suppose except try to fix it.

Found a couple of dry solder joints and the battery has leaked (these are all easy fixes) but other than that, the CLM looks to be in very good condition.

Just an update, its working perfectly! I put in a new battery and cleaned all the contacts, checked for bad joints etc,etc and did the Snap fix for good measure.

I'm VERY pleased I must say, thats a perfect 03 VIM and a working CLM for less than $180 Thumbs Up

Happy days.

Not too sure about doing any mods to the spare CLM though, lot of work. Might just keep it as a "virgin" spare.

One thing that helps for broken (cracked corner) chip socket is wrap small cabletie around socket, so it tightnens contacts...

Bingo!!!! What an absolutely superb idea, that would work, that would certainly work, simple but effective (and easily removable!).

Thank you for that Jarmo, I had been contemplating wedging something up against the socket but the tie wrap idea is a stroke of genius! Thumbs Up
