Hmm, who really wants this? I sure don't. If I am going to tolerate a game console with a BD player then I'd much prefer the PS3 to the Xbox. While i own both, and game on the 360, I think I am fairly safe saying the Xbox is one of the worse QC products I have ever seen.
And with BD players now well under $300 one again needs to ask about why anything should be integrated into the 360.

It'd be nice if they would give us a 1:1 exchange for our HD-DVD XBOX players

And they would do that just because they are in business to lose money?

I'd buy it. I already have the xbox. It would be nice to add a drive to it for $100.
The xbox blends more seamlessly with my media center entertainment. Tversity is nice, but not the same.

OK, I have to quote the Register article...
| Quote: | Microsoft has once again poured cold water over the latest rumour that it’ll launch a Blu-ray Disc drive add-on for the Xbox 360.
A blogger going by the name of “Major Nelson” has posted an audio interview online with Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft’s Group Product Manager for the Xbox 360. In the interview, which took place at the Tokyo Game Show this week, Greenberg said: “We have no plans to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience.”
Earlier this week, it was rumoured that a joint venture between Samsung and Toshiba had been tasked with making the add-on drives for the console, which would be sold for between $100 and $150 (£51-87/€73-110).
However, Greenberg went on to say: “We also believe that the future's digital, and that's why we've invested in a massive library of entertainment content.”
His comments echoed a statement released by Microsoft back in May in which it stated that is has “no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360” because “games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles”.
Greenberg also went on to disparage Blu-ray as a format and said that “if you look at retail sales and availability, there's not a lot there, and what is there is at a premium.
"It's pretty clear it's not the next DVD,” he said.
Blu-ray also took a beating from Blockbuster Video last month, when the firm's CFO, Thomas Casey, hinted that wholesale and retail prices of Blu-ray films has slowed consumer adoption. |
1. Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles? Is that a blanket statement? You think there might be some variation? Some exceptions to the rule? Maybe quite a few exceptions? What about game consoles that can play excellent-quality high-definition movies? Because I know of at least 4 consoles in my immediate circle of family and friends that have had either zero or one game purchased for it. They were purchased expressly for playing HD movies, streaming HD content from a computer, playing music, and even DVD's. Hint: They weren't Xbox 360's.
2. There's not a lot there? Of course, it's new format dumb-ass. Yes, there's a premium... because it's premium content on a premium format... Dumb-ass.
3. It's clear it's not the next DVD? Really? How do you know that? Does MS have crystal ball? You have Ballmer a year ago publicly predicting that Apple would never sell very many iPhones, and now another MS talking head saying BD isn't the next DVD. Is everybody at Microsoft that speaks publicly a complete moron?
4. How does the CFO of Blockbuster making a comment that BD's retail prices have slowed consumer adoption constitute the format "taking a beating"? Of course BD's retail prices have slowed consumer adoption. So what? If Vista were $10, a lot more people would have it, too. Wait. Maybe not.
Man, that article is amazing - both the Microsoft guy, the Blockbuster guy, and the Register writer all sound like dipshits to me.

Would I sell my 360 to buy a blueray 360? Unlikely. However if the price change it minimal and I was in the market for a 360, this would help sway me more. I'd probably get the 360 anyway because of the games for it that are not offered on the PS3 though.
Edit: Oh I see it is for an external player. In that case I would consider buying it. Since I already own a 360, it would be much cheaper to buy an external player for $100 than pay $300 for a PS3 or blueray player.

I'd say like all statements of this nature it is a generalization. As a generalization, I'm sure it is very true.
There were some PS3s sold to be used only as BD players, but as BD players come down in price, I don't see it happening because it is not better than other BD players and is in fact more clumsy to use. After comparing an LG BH-200 to a PS3, there is NO WAY I would buy a PS3 for a BD only player. I think the market for "PS3 as BD player only" if not dead yet (which I think it is or should be) will be VERY soon.
So yes, games drive game console purchases. This has been true for the complete history of game consoles with the exception of a very small group of consumers during a small window of time.

Yea the 360 has almost always been outselling the PS3(at least in the US). Nobody can touch the Wii though hahaha! I hear the amount of profit the Nintendo is making is crazy.

How is it more clumsy? Slot load, no tray, FAST loading and playback, and an excellent UI. What, you have to push a button to select the BD? Never mind the excellent media capabilities.

You might be right... Or not. Heck, you didn't even LIKE Sony or BD 9 months ago. Even with the latest crop of BD players... How long does that LG take to load a disc compared to the PS3. I don't think I've ever seen a disk that takes more than 10 seconds to load on the PS3. It's one of the cooler pieces of gear I've ever owned.

I know it was a generalization. I was just taking a bit of a stab at the MS guy... Of course games drive YOUR console sales! Because you can't USE it for anything else (at least as far as new movies in HD goes) like you can with your competitors system.
The 360 had a LONG head-start on the PS3. Watch what happens in a year when the PS3 is still fresh, has some great new games, plays BD movies, has had some cool updates, and the 360 is starting to look a little long in the tooth. In some ways, it does already.

Yeah, because they're selling a game system based on 7-year old PS2-level technology with inertia sensor-based controllers and novel motion-based game-play. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
I wonder why the Wii is still hard to get after all this time... You think Nintendo is artificially constraining supply to keep the "gotta have it" mentality prevalent?
For whatever reason, I have exactly zero interest in the Wii.

I agree 480p max in a world where even CNN is in HD seems like ancient technology. I think the controllers are what sell the thing. My guess is most game console are connected with S-Video or composite anyway so “Joe Six-pack” could care less about HD or even know if he’s running it.

Yea the Wii is marketed at non-hard core gamers or theatre enthusiasts. (Who happen to be the majority) But yea one could say it is just a heavily modified gamecube. So it doesn't cost much to make them, and they sell for $199, same price point as the base model 360.

That is true, however the 360 also has great new games on the way, and has console updates. In a month here or so, Bill is going to release the new user interface(dashboard) update for the 360. It looks pretty cool, and is suppose to change the 360 to compete with the Wii and the PS3. So we shall see.

Don't drink the koolaid too much. You are fooling yourself if you think the PS3 isn't clumsy in an HT.
BD remotes and lack of IR makes it a deal breaker for many, and at least requires additional hardware to make it work correctly.
I thought the UI was great at first, but I have grown sick of it. I prefer sidebars I guess. The media capabilities can be matched by any number of other devices.
The load times are SUPER fast though, and that is the main reason I have it still I think.
I don't own a game, and besides Singstar, I have never even contemplated it.
I have played Wii on several occassions and had a blast, but never seen the need to purchase one.
I have owned three Xbox 360's and it has been mainly for its integration with Media center.
