I tried a 1/4' bolt in the mounting holes on a 1270 and it is too small. A 5/16 is too big. I tried coarse and fine threads.
Any idea what size I need?

It's Japaneese so it's metric.
Let's see what the manual has to say.... http://www.curtpalme.com/docs/Sony1252_1272_Install.pdf

The correct size is metric, M8 x 1.25... there are different lengths needed for the different locations on the projector, and you can find that information in the manuals. Using bolts that are too long can damage the components inside the PJ and using the wrong thread size can tear the mounting nuts loose. I have had success with rethreading the M8 hole to 5/16-18, but I would recommend using the metric bolts. They can be purchased at an auto supply store in most cases.
