i have a little room above the pj and thought this might be a good idea.

is there any particular make or model that i should look for or would any apc ups that fits up there work? what sort of ratings should i look for?

while i'm asking about ups's, would you recommend one for my rack as well? i have (or will have)
denon 2809
butkicker amp
ps3
tosh a-1
tivo HD
and possibly a laptop station

thanks for the advice guys!

Do you want it for isolation or for power available to shut it down so it doenst happen suddenly? The marquee I think uses or can use 600v, I would look for an Isolation transformer(I'm hooked on these now!) They isolate the power and especially ground from the rest of the electrical circuits in the house. Ebay has some smaller ones that might fit up there, but some do have an audible mechanical hum but if its above the ceiling you wont hear it.

I like the PS audio stuff, especially for audio systems. It's all made in the USA and they are a colorado company too. On sale for $200.

You'd need a reasonably large one to keep the projector running...

I used one of the these with my Marquee 9500. When running the Marquee was drawing around 350W.

A couple of years ago, I had a bizarre convergence problem where the blue convergence would cycle around.

The blue would drift above the red and green line for a second, then drift to the right for a second, then drift down low for a second, then drift to the left side for a second, constantly repeating.

I thought maybe it was a failing capacitor somewhere on the blue video chain.

When Cliff visited, I showed it to him. He was puzzled for a while too, but when he unplugged the UPS that I had sitting on top of the projector, the convergence snapped into place and has been rock solid ever since.

Yepp they create a large magnetic field, if you do have room in the ceiling you should put it about 3-4 feet fromt he PJ and run the wire to it. I still say an isolation Transformer would be best.

my thoughts were that if the power went out while we were in the pj, the ups would allow me to shut down, keeping the fans running.

i know they also provide surge protection and stable current (i don't think i have a problem, but...better safe than sorry, right!)

Thanks clarence. i was planning on putting it right above the pj. the power feed to the pj outlet does originate from my av closet, so i should be able to turn that power feed into an "extension cord" and plug it into a ups located in said closet.

thanks dragan. that device looks well built, but it does not have a power backup or provide stable current, correct?

Athanasios: could you provide a link on ebay or elsewhere to what you are referring to?

thanks again guys!

Sure, Isolation transformers are used for very sensitive equipment and also in the medical field to prevent micro shock death. small voltages can kill you while under the knife!!! Boilermaker here told me about them, they isolate the ground from all your other circuits in the house. There are different type you can get you can look for one that would run your entire theater and is hard wired in place and you can run a sub panel box from it, I got a 5KVamp one that has about 41 amps output. Or you can get a small plug in unit. the one I got usually go for over a thousand dollors but you can find them much cheaper, i got mine for 150 bucks and it has very good noise suppression too, 120db.

here is a link to a smaller one that is 5 amps, enough for your marquee. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=120308869043

and this is a really good transformer of 5 KVA http://cgi.ebay.com/Topaz-Ultra-isolation-transformer-5KV-power-conditioner_W0QQitemZ150296510089QQihZ005QQcategoryZ71391QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

that one is heavy 100 pounds mine was 140 !!!!

they do hum but i have it in another room feeding a sub panel box.

here is a link to what i had to do for that.
How to add an Isolation transformer to your Theater

You could add the big Iso transformer and also add the ups after , I also was able to remove my monster power and adcom line conditioners as they actually could add some noise. I had a ground loop buzz and now its gone, bt I have an adcom amp and preamp and they inject a small hum on their own, new preamp coming soon !

Hope this helps, and if you do add the UPS make sure its at least 700 watts and keep it at least a few feet from your PJ the electro magnetive waves will mess up the focus and convergence magnets of the PJ.

I made a mistake i went back to my isolation transformer thread and realized i told you my 5KVA transformer isolates ground, i was wrong it isolates the hot and neutral from what Bob told me there. Any how I am glad I did it and think its a good idea for everyone to do.

I have a APC Smart 3000 5U rack mount UPS. It powers everything in the theater. It is one big mother and requires a sturdy rack to hold it. It will out weigh everything else it the rack combined. It probably out weighs the 9500LC.
Go to e-bay and do a search for APC smart ups and look for the rack mount ones.

does that one have voltage regulation? is that important?

Here is a link to the manual, on the second page are the specs.

Yes it does have voltage regulation.

Thats why I like my new Isolation transformer, I used to get a brown out eevrytime my Air conditioner would start up, i would measure the voltage at my monster HTS3500 and it would still go down, then i added the iso Xfrmr and its steady, with out the monster power in the rack anymore!
