I am up in Allen and have a Sony D50 floor mounted with a 110" screen. The D50 is considered on the mid lower scale but I am very happy with the image. Your welcome to come by and take a look if you would like

Lots of those 8110 projectors came with the 2035-03 VIM, I found that the 03 VIMs provided a fairly major PQ upgrade.

Its been a very long time since I've posted here so I'm not sure who is still around or not. I would recommend checking out Phil's G70 and that would show you what a high end 8'' LC machine can do. I know Dave no longer has his Cine 8, but I did think there were a couple of more of us around here. I thought someone in Dallas had a good 9 incher and there were a couple more high end 8s but I just can't recall. Good luck with your search and these guys always have some excellent answers.

Welcome to the forum. If this hobby is to stay alive we need to keep people interested in it.

I'm sure the first reply was a misunderstanding, but when I read it the first time I thought it was harsh too. A lot of the guys here have been on the forum for a long time and love to rib one another. They don't always seem remember what it was like to jump in with both feet as a new person here, but I also see that in later posts, he has gone out of his way to help out, so hopefully it can be a forgive and forget situation. Whatever you do, don't tell them you want to reflect the image off a first surface mirror. I still haven't lived that one down... Wink

If you aren't scared of tweaking a CRT and upgrading, I agree, this is the hobby for you. Digitals are plug and play, there's not much you can do to them to make them better than already are. CRT's have great potential and if you work for it, you'll really appreciate it. There's a huge sense of accomplishment when you get a great image out of one, then when you think you've done the best you can, you add a Moome card or HDFury, then add on a RTC2200 or Box 1040 and the image gets better and better. I've already spent more $$ on toys for mine than I did for the projector. I added multiple good quality cables, then I added the HDFury (love it), added a high def cable box/PVR (nice!), then added a PS3 for bluray (LOVE it). I just got my new ceiling mount and in about a week I'll get the box 1040 and I can't wait. I might even hook the computer back up to it, just for fun.

Another point(s)? - Almost everyone here is faithful to thier brand (NEC, Electrohome, Barco, Sony,... and yes even AmPro). Trying to get a realistic answer on "which is better" is going to be tough. Some hate Marquees (electrohome) because they are ugly, some hate NEC's because they are loud (if you watch movies without sound that is) and difficult to set up, etc... I'm not touching the AmPro bashing here, as I still don't understand it.

I think everyone would agree though, that a good running 8XXX series from Electrohome is not a bad place to start and I think of all projectors, they currently have the most mod capability.

If you can, go see the D50 you were offered to view and see if it helps your decision. It made my mind up for me.

It's a Vidkron Vision 3 with a Vidkron 2500 scaler. Projector and tubes have 1400 original hours on them. Basically, everything I need. What's your opinions on this? I know this unit is the Marquee 8110. Price is going to be a little cheaper than whats advertised, but I'd like your honest opinions about it.

Take it!!! Doc is a well respected guy and he really wants to keep that PJ, So I'd take it now before he changes his mind. The case alone you can resell for at least 500 bucks. And marquees are workhorses and parts still avaialble in abundance along with it still being manufactured parts in the future will around for a long time.

Another one I'm looking at is a NEC XG 1101 LC. It's quite a bit more money, but still within the budget(just barely). The good thing about this one is it's local. So shipping the unit won't be needed. Bad thing is it's not hooked up.

I too would take the NEC but one word of caution... the learning curve is a little steeper on the nec and you need to be careful before you start tweaking it... so if you get it just make sure you get some good instruction on its use ... like you can get here...

As for my first comment, it was meant to be taken in fun. The environment here is a very informal and fun one. It can get like a locker room. We're mostly guys and the testosterone can get the best of me.
