I am actually looking for a 8500 or 9500 for a test chassis to play with. Lenses and good tubes are NOT required. If you know where there is one let me know.

Some day I'll get a 8500 or 9500LC to play with. I have a set of tubes to build a 9500 out of a 8500. I'd love to do a over/under mount so they could be compaired on the same screen. That way I could judge for my self who has the best image.

I have never owned a marquee but barco sucks compared to my AmPros. I still can not get my 801s to show a 1080i signal. I can change the source (same dvd player)over to 720p and it works perfect.
My Ampros have not had a problem with any signal I have sent to them.I have 5 of them now. The main 4600 that is in the theater is used about 3-4 hours every day.

Scott is currently in Fl. and I think for quite alot of years, although he did live here many years ago, I believe. But that wouldn't of been my influence since I've only been here for 3 yrs. And actually the house went on the market today. We decided we want to live somewhere else although we havn't decided what state yet. Funny story, when we sold the house in Pa. and weren't sure of what state or city we wanted to move to, we threw a dart at a map and thats how we ended up here. No darts this time though. Were making a list of what we want nearby, of things that are not here and we miss.

OK, now I'm just plain curious. Vibe and jkruger. What is the main or multiple reason(s) why you guys are Ampro haters?

Because it's The Thing To Do around here. Smile Pete started the Ampro-bashing long ago, even before Curt's board started I think. He just enjoyed tweaking Ampro owners for whatever reason, and did so at every possible opportunity. Now it's part of the culture of this board so people do it without even knowing why. Mr. Green

I believe Pete actually had a reason. If I am not mistaken he bought some off of the gov and had problems with them and could never get them to work. I believe he also hated the way the remote or set up worked, but I can't totally remember. I don't think he set out to condemn the Ampro at every turn, but he became the yin to Chip's yang. Plus, he hated the extreme size of the Ampros. I have heard this from others as well, but I had lunch with Scott a couple of months ago and he had just bought a Barco 12xx. I didn't see it (nor have I ever seen a Barco), but Scott says the Barco makes the Ampros looked svelte.Smile

There are a lot more than that. According to Scott, VDC Florida was founded on the ashes of Ampro. Scott can correct me, but I believe Ampro had a Navy contract that VDC inherited when they started the projection division. It was based on the 3600. Scott said they have been modified very little and are still being made today. The Marquees came later. Here is a pic of some brand new Ampros circa 2006:

Are you planning to stay in S.C. or are you expanding your search? One of the coolest things I had ever heard was from a couple I met about ten years ago. After getting married, they decided to live in about ten to twenty places in the U.S. (I can't remember the exact number) for around a month or two each. This gave them a good idea of what they liked and disliked. When they were finished, they settled in Alaska and absolutely love it there.

No, we are not planning on staying in SC. Sounds familiar about trying out different states. If the house sells, were thinking about getting a motorhome, not a big expensive one or to travel the country, but to go to a location where we think we might want to settle and see what its like, before we buy again. We really want to be within 10 or 20 minutes of a nice lake so we can enjoy my boats. Right now we have to travel 1 or 2 hours just to launch for a day of fun.

Spank,
That photo of new Ampros looks like VDC is into making BORG style 3600s now. I cannot wait until these go out of service and we can get them. Is the large cable from a separate power unit?

Robert,
I believe these are like the split packs with the electronics in one box and the tubes in another, but don't quote me as I can't totally remember. If I remember correctly, then they had to be designed to withstand the abuse of being on a ship and tight spaces. So, a split pack would make sense. Hell, it is Scott's thread so let him spill the beans.Smile These should be nice when they come off active duty, but I wonder how much damage being out to sea will do to them.

Mac,
That sounds like a great plan. I hope it works out After traveling all over the US, I know the places I prefer.

Scott,
There is a guy in the for sale section selling some Ampros, but I guess your biggest problem is the tube.

Does the 4200 take the same Sony tubes as a 1292???
Ooooo, that remids me. I have a set of 4200 (Sony) neck boards modded to take P19's. Someone with a decent P19 to donate to Scott and I'll give him the neck board. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't Scott who modded the board. It was done at VDC.

All this started because the CPU battery died. For some reason this made the I2C error disable switch on the CPU not work. The remote kept saying ERROR 30 AT 74 which is a registration board error. It was right, I had removed the registration on green bd some time ago and disabled the error messages by turning switch 2 on so the remote would work. It doesn't if there are error messages.

I went to Radio Shock to find a battery to replace the 3.5V Keeper. They only had 3V button type Lithium batteries that measured 3.25V with a DVM. It works, maybe not for 15 years, though.

It still makes me sick that I burned the green tube. A little lack of patience after a trying day at work.

I've got a decent 09MEX tube that I'll mount in the housing and verify one way or the other if this type will work. I have some focus mags that are the same size as the 2222 types but with the correct windings for the 4200 focus modulator. I'm thinking the focus can be improved with these.

Plenty 'o projects.........

Scott
