I've been offered a Barco 701mm in good order for a very reasonable sum of money.
Will this be a good upgrade from a Data 800? I know the tubes are smaller, but from what I can gather, they are brighter, and the electronics allow for a higher definition picture.
The problem I have at the moment with the Data is a soft picture at higher than video resolutions. Does the 701mm suffer from this?
Is there anything in particular this model suffers from reliability wise?
Finally, Will my RCVDS 800 be compatable with a 701mm? I have several RGB inputs I need to switch.

if your looking for added sharpness your next big gain will be an electromagnetic focus set. In Barco's this the 808/1208/1209 series of machines. Good news is they're not miuch bigger than the 800, the 701 on the other hand is a cute little set about the size of a new 3 chip LCD.

Yeah, the size and more streamlined look would gain me some WAF.
Other than this, is there any significant performance gain of the newer 701mm over my old BD800?

As above the 701 is a small set.
It has some plus points, you could get away with having it on a table, and it won't take over the room. Color is quite good out of the box, due to the built in filtering in the glycol.
I have an 808s to compare it with, and the picture is comparable up to 1280x1024, with my 701 having very low hours tubes. After that the 808s is far better (after colour filtering the 808s then it's just better all round).
If you aren't going to need HD then I guess the 701 may be a good choice, if it has good tubes.

I think it probably makes sence to buy it, even if I don't use it straight away. Like I said, my 800 is showing its age, despite its low hours.
The 701 does have good tubes, remote control and also a ceiling mount (my 800 is on the ceiling). I can pick it up for £90 quid, so not bad.
If the picture is better than the 800, then thats money well spent.

Oh, and another thing.... Is it true that the 701MM has LIDO, or was that optional? The seller can't tell me.

The 800 also has tinted glycol so you're not gaining anything there.
If the 7xx is much newer/lower hours it's not a bad way to go, especially if the 800 is drifting on you. A bit of a sideways upgrade but if the price is right like you said... why not? Think of it as a backup projector.
The other good news is that it'll be dead simple for you to set up as you know Barco's already.

Barco Vision 701 "Multimedia" according to some old information I have. Not sure, but it might refer to having component input capability in addition to composite, s-video, and the various RGB options. Probably just plain NTSC component, but what I have isn't clear on that. Ask for the model number, this owner's manual I have shows the BV701mm to be an R9000740. I don't know that there was a Data or Graphics version.
If it is a 'vision', it may have less input capability than the Data 800. A plain BV701 wouldn't support any HD level inputs, but a BD800 should be able to handle 720p and 1080i if you wanted to run that high.
