I'm still a bit fuzzy on this but has VDC taken over manufacturing and distribution of new c elements or has 3M just given up due to lack of demand and or interest ?

What I expect is that 3M like companies (not that many) are the only one to make such parts and VDC will never invest in all equipment/processes/knowledge to get that in-house...
The "behaviour" I have seen from VDC -> blocking all low volume / niche markets is part of their strategy...

So, the margins are in refurb of CRT's for example instead of providing some parts to poor souls like us....and they are spending too much time on this getting these "micro" orders in place....
The big chunks for them must be selling total equipment to companies in simulators etc and agreement on service contracts with those...
In order to do so...they still need all the parts and the companies providing these also might want to focus on large volumes....so....large volume orders to large volume deliveries.....without any disturbance of unsubstantial orders like ours.

And with that in mind they both benefit from that and perhaps there's an agreement of this as well...

On the other hand...simulators-> space/planes...? safety......maybe it is also full control of the supply chain demanded by these end customers...

just some thoughts... Wink

Well this raises the question, if the c-elements are no longer in production and as a itegral part of the HD-10 lens then that must mean that the the whole lens family is no longer being produced. If so then that puts the 9500LC' continued production at risk. Wanna bet the end of the Marquee production line has a fixed ending date or number?

I think the c elements will be in production...just not visible or available to us....

Regarding the life-span of crt pj's.....in simulators for space/avionics etc.....

In these businesses (and automotive, medical, mil) they don't like changes due to the risk it might involve....so release of a new "step might take 5..10 years.....if it aint broke....policy

so for the crt pj in simulators....the alternatives might only bring a replacement but no improvement to them at this moment...so why should they change to lcd/dila/dlp?
They will stick to the old stuff as long as possible and as long as the service and supply is guaranteed...BUT.....they wont bet on 1 horse..it's quite common to spread any risk by having second/third suppliers and in case of crt pj's this might be a problem...so....what I expect is that all preps are started to switch to a new platform and to fill the "gap" they will maintain the crtpj as long as required...(no longer than 5..10 y)...
As said...they will do this with "max control" since the number of suppliers in this are limited

VDC has taken over the lens business as well from what I hear, and chip they also still make the ampro for the navy i belive. So they are suppose to make the C-elemnts available according to Terry who stated this in a post over on AVS, and if they are making the C-elements or have a company to do so I assume they make or have a company making the Hd10's as well or have a very large stock or refurbishing techniques in place. Also I have been in contact with a person at a company called L-3communications who service over 100 marquee flight simulators. and from i understand they still get the PJ's from VDC. He also has taken intrest in if I can find another MFTR of the Bellows since VDC still wants even them to send in the tubes for repair , so volume doesnt even matter to VDC anymore they want a monopoly.

I think that you hit the nail on the head. VDC wants to monopolize everything they do in the CRT market/
I was told that as part of the "deal" they did with 3M to take the CElement business over, thate would make them available to customers who wanted them. Want to get the only way you can get a CElement from VDC is to purchase a PJ or a completed tube assy.

Not to sound like the grim reaper here but how much of a market is there to monopolize. I'd like to know how many "NEW" crt projectors they actually produce annually. Remember, they are also in the digital display arena.
I'm sure they are servicing much more than they are selling.

Well the guy at L-3 comm said they just switched form a custom CRT PJ those special High rez tubes were made for by thomas electronics a few years ago to Marquees. He was one of the Engineers on the Triton 1080 PJ when it was designed with some special type of high output phosphor tube, the ones that CRT ben has and I am getting a free used set to see if i can make a VNB mod easily for them. He said they just put over 100 Marquees in flight simulators in the past few years and plan to switch the other flight simulators that use other PJ to marquees. Not sure of how many that is though. I should get the tubes on tuesday or wednesday and will take pics of the internals of the neck so someone can help me reroute jumpers for the tube to the VNB of the marquee. Man I keep getting thses new ideas I cant get to my blend ! Because if these tubes work I will convert my one 8500 to an 9500LC, and mate it with the 9500LC retro I got fromthe Gov liquidation, thet one need new Glycol and thats it, mint tubes with good output. I would only need to change if the color output of these high rez custom tubes are slightly different. Who knows how long this PJ will take as I still need to finish soem work for Antorsea on his CLM's. One down one left to go for him.

Hi Chip, No these aren't the VDC tubes that TSE was talking about for the Marquee 8500HR. these were specialy designed with some new crystaline addative to the phosphor that makes them higher output but also to get that they do need some other kind of connection or voltage increase on one of the grids, i didnt really understand but the guy said they will work in a marquee with some neck board work. They have a sony pin out too, what was strange when i asked for an evaluation set he asked me if i wanted the anode the same as on the marquee tube? These may have two points to connect the anode top or bottom so it definitly would be easier then to modify the VNB's of the marquee. i was also thinking of making my own PCB socket that would go in between the marquee VNB socket and the tubes base connections. This though would make it hard to put the VNB cover back on unless i really squeeze it in there.
