thanks Ben. Very Happy

I just got a reply for cost per bellow and asked what the minimum "run" would be.
he said there is no minimum run but there is a lead time of 4 weeks as the machine they do injection
work with is on a schedual and they have to add the customer into the schedual, so the more per run the better
access to a supply for us. I copied Galens post and mailed it to him so he is on it and will get back to me on actual estimated cost per unit.He said there might be a savings if we do make more, but it be small.

only an idjut would dump their LC marquee for a digital. Wink Considering that the AVS forum moderator who can have his pick of any digital out there has chosen a 9500LC , you'de think there would be more interest. I just think it's too soon after some very rough holidays money wise. Lets wait a few weeks for tax return season.

what Tax return? I pay each year...sucks owning a business some times. My estimates excess i just put into the
pot to lower the next years estimates, i never see a dime. Maybe i need a new accountant Wink

I was thinking the same thing about digitals, i got a nice PM form a memebr I never heard of in England thanking me for this endevor
hopefully we can get some more exposer.

I was hoping maybe Kal could link this poll on the main site as Any bellow we can get to sell part will go to Curts site.
This way people who browse for CRT things(possibly bellows) will see this and chip in.

If i were a marquee LC owner(wait i am!! ) Id want a full set as spares just for piece of mind
that whne ever i do need a tube swap i have a few Bellows handy in case I damge them some how swapping tubes.

And a tube swap is much much easier if you have the bellows off the housing, you can get a blade under the
Metal face plate and tube face with out worrying about slipping and putting a gash in your bellow.

Yeah, well, remember, we've seen some G90 owners switch to flashlights, too.

So they got a brighter picture and they don't have to mess with convergence and geometry...so what? If the CRT PJ is
healthy you shouldn't have to do more than the occasional minor convergence tweak anyway.

And the CRT PJs they got rid of will still be going strong long after their flashlights have started to deteriorate in ways that
no CRT PJ ever does. Dichroics bleach and colors fade, cemented prism assemblies experience glue yellowing, drifting,
and fracture, the whole optical core slowly gets plated with hard-to-remove, baked-on dust, and let's not forget those
expensive lamps!

My 9500 is built on a chassis dating from 1996. (Overhauled and converted) I'd like to see a flashlight still be in good working shape when it's 12 years old! But I doubt I ever will.

Well CJ,

...that all may be true, and there's lots of good reasons why we are all still here...

but in general I think we have been trying to stay away from the digital debate,
so as to remain focused on the CRT issues, and not invite or initiate the long
and controversial threads that often distract from otherwise great CRT topics.

Such as this one - about a possibilty of having a new source for Marquee bellows,
the technical details that are involved, and how to pre-sell enough to make it possible....

Thanks,
G

Ok Dale found a good material for our application. i sent him a copy of what Galen said and what i also told him. here is his responce.

Dale wrote:

Tom:

Here is an update on the rubber bellows...

I went over the operating environment, checked chemical compatability with our materials assistant and measured the hardness of the bellows supplied. It appears that a 50 durometer Ethylene-Ppropylenye would suit your application the best.

So it looks like we found a better material, I will ask Dale about the porosity of it that Galen mentioned in the e-mail i sent to Dale, so I know he knows about it, all we ned is a few more i say 8 more people who want 3 bellows.
at 50 bucks each. I d like to order 50-100 at first this way I'll have extras if more want them and they wont have to wait 4 weeks for a schedule of the mold injection Machine.

If we get the 8 more for 3 bellows i will go ahead and put up the tooling costs, I'll take the risk I guess.
I am pretty sure we can get to 50 bellows total so I will at least recoup the tooling cost but this wont cover the cost of the bellows from my end, I hope later sales will pay me back as more people need them. I might take on an Investor
but I will have to hear back from them first and also decide if I want to do this on my own.

I am very optimistic about this new development, this new material formulation should stop the "sweating" issue and the osmosis issue as well.

Galen, I was thinking about the porosity thing, do you think its a good idea to have no porosity at all? I think that it might be a good idea for the bellow to have some incase of pressure build up it has a place to escape and not crack the tube face, or am I just over thinking the whole thing? I could possibly have there designer add some accordion
ripples on the sides for possible expansion. maybe two or three? Not sure if it will then add to the cost of the mold or not, it might make it a better design.

One more thing I have to say now before i go any further. I am not a big corporate company with reserves of cash to cover any warranty, form a possible malfunction.
I will ask them how they test it for pressure bursting ratings, puncture ratings and any other possible mishap that could happen. I do however think this will be a non issue.
So I will not be finically responsible for any malfunction of the bellow, or any improper installation thereof and any damage to associated equipment. I am doing this for the guys here. I will be taking the same risk as everyone else as i am going to re-bellow my own PJ's.

Ok guys make sure everyone votes on the poll.

I think I will start a list like we did for the C-element Group buy.

A few more 3 bellow commitments and it will be a GO !!!

I have to take some glycol To the Lab for them to use in a new test machine for testing absorption etc. here is part of his reply:

Quote:
......the QC lab recently set up a procedure for a vapor transmission test. This test looks like it would provide useful data with regard to the moisture and sweating issues. We could run the Ethylene-Propylene side by side with a silicone (since the sample you provided was silicone) for comparison. All we would need is for you to supply the Ethylene Glycol/Glycerol mixture. I think we would need a pint or so to do the test, but I will confirm how much is actually needed as I think they test 3 samples and take the average for the results. If this is something you want to try, let me know. Normally there is a lab fee for running special tests. No need to worry about that, the guys in the lab just want to try out the test procedure they set up. I think this would be the first test for them. Just let me know.

So should we start a list? I'll go back through and start a list with the names that have probably voted in the poll
and also left a comment bout it.

Sounds like things are coming together - great work!, and thanks!
here's a quick reply - got to get out the door.....

Porosity of any sort, or permeability to glycol/alcohol or water vapor = very bad!

Testing at lab = very good!

Accordian ripples = very good idea (!), and will help absorb stray light (!)

I am still willing to send the Barco housing so you can have them check out the material used
in the bellows - which just doesn't leak or swell or sweat - in my experience.

Personally I have not agreed with the scheme of using an air bubble in the LC housing, this just
adds 'active area' to the glycol which could increase water absorption. It also will cause a nasty
internal reflection which will light up your HT in a bad way. A better solution is to squeeze the
bellows (w/ assistant or wood blocks) during the fill, so that there will be some space to expand.
(Install fill and bleed screws before releasing "squeeze" on bellows)

Thanks Galen, I'll have them test the material they think is better and then if its not what they think would be best i'll have you send me a small sample of your material.
all thats needed is a sliver of it for them to test.

On a side note here, i mentioned earlier about another source or bare LUG's. The guy I go those Thomas Tubes from still would like to know how many are looking for new LUG's. They get them from a few places. VDC(entire assemblies), Thomas and Q4 services who i assume both have stock and/or make new LUG's. He said the thomas are every bit as good as the old stock new LUG's. i am waiting for a reply as to how many he would feel is enough to make it worth while, as they may be getting close to a new order so they can re tube the 9500LC simulators they service( they do a tube change every 8000 hours), also i hope to get a price for each,he originally said they would be in price range of the tubular outlet price, i asked if they can do it for 750-900 per tube, less than Tubular outlets. So if anyone also needs a new LUG this is a possibility.
Or you can deal with Thomas electronics and Q4 Services directly.

Back to the Bellow's i just got off the Phone with Dale and am meeting him tomorrow to give him the old Glycol, I also asked him about the accordion ridges on the bellow and he said that it might add more cost to the tooling but he has to run it by the tooling department. But we will discuss that as well, and i emphasized the importance of the concentric rings on the two bonding areas tot he housings, he said they will definitely be there as well Very Happy

I really like these guys and they seam very enthused even for a very small project where they know they wont make much money, i guess this economic slow down
is working in out favor.
