I hate to say it, but I have to agree with stuffandpuff. (And NO, I'm not from Virginia!!  )
Poking gentle fun at a guy's CAPS-ized ebay ad is reasonable. Ganging up and harassing him via email is not.

I agree with you Phil. We ARE better than that....HOWEVER....
I blame the discenting posts on contests that kick the door wide open for an army of 3 poster moral cops who chose to 'de-lurk' and think they (he? she?) have a right to control the masses. 
I've been on the receiving end as well as the giving end of these type things. I didn't cry or run away. I learned how to better compose my statements and questions, AND I learned to have my technical ducks in a row when selling something; either an idea or a product.
We're a bunch of GUYS (mostly) here OK? I don't come here to read through some craptastic feel good gushy movie script from the Lifetime for Women network. If you can't play football, stay off the field. If you INSIST on playing, then protect your nuts.
I wouldn't ever email anybody but I'll be damned if I'll shut the f*ck up because an unrelated third party poster made it their business.
The only thing I see wrong with this thread is it's in the wrong place...it should be over in Off Topic.

I am a little behind on this one, but I did ask him if he was in a hurry to sell this because that is the impression I got from his ad. his response...
this is a privately owned ,not commercial unit-my ad runs for 7 days-I hope it sells by then-I am NEVER in a hurry,if it does not sell ,I will throw it away...
go dumpster diving if you are in the neighborhood.

bull****, Gary. Nobody was harassing him. From what I've seen in this thread and what I've personally written to and received from the seller, nobody has been unpleasant or hostile except for HIM. Poking gentle fun is exactly what I was doing, in fact. That is, until HE made it into something more.
Curt wasn't the only one amazed and curious at the lens caps and control panel door - I was, too. I've had FOUR 12xx's. Not one had a control panel door that wasn't busted off, only one had lens caps and I was genuinely curious about the machine. So, I wrote a very polite and concise note asking about the projector hours and tube condition. In the third and final sentence of my inquiry, I asked why his ad text was all caps and if his caps lock key was broken... I closed with a "Thank you" as I always do in my inquiries. His response? An all-out attack. I'll quote it again since you mustn't have read the first time:

So COMPLETELY uncalled-for was that response, I'm actually considering reporting the ******* to ebay. If anything, HIS RESPONSE WAS HARASSMENT!
Then, Mr. Johnny-come-lately-I-just-registered-yesterday-but-think-I-know-everything-about-everybody-here has the gall to drop in and lecture us all on how we're being childish, how people like us are the reason America is going down the tubes, and top it all off - how we're products "of the American Government's policy over the last 30 years" - which apparently must be a bad thing.
So, Gary... You'll have to excuse me when I:
A) Say I disagree COMPLETELY on your assessment of situation, and
B) Tell one of our newest members, respectfully, BITE ME.

Is it me, or can you not differentiate between what people talked about doing and what they actually did? In case it isn't clear, talking about doing something is not the same as actually doing the something.

Well, in Kal's defense, I think he was joking in his earlier "we should" post. He used a smiley, after all. Same in my case - I really wasn't expecting anybody to all "gang up" on a guy for using caps in his ebay listing. Hell, it's his ebay listing - if he wants to get crap sales figures because people can't read the listing, that's his business.
The problem I have with all this is there seems to be a little lack of perspective. What some of us are joking around about doing and we actually did are two different things. While I was clearly joking around about jerking the guy's chain, when I actually emailed him, I did it in a courteous and respectful manner. In return I was threatened - which I don't take kindly to. It was totally uncalled for, and what I don't understand is what some of your ideas of what "harassing" must be.
From Merriam-Webster:
1 a: exhaust, fatigue b (1): to annoy persistently (2): to create an unpleasant or hostile situation for especially by uninvited and unwelcome verbal or physical conduct
2: to worry and impede by repeated raids <harassed the enemy>
Nobody has been persistently annoying and nobody has been intentionally unpleasant or hostile. By the text book definition, it's the seller who's harassed ME!!! Apparently, some of you seem to think one or two emails is harassment.
Clearly the OP was trying to get a rise out of the seller. I wouldn't go so far as to say harass, though. Seriously... Does 2 or 3 emails really constitute harassment in your minds? The seller's going to get far more emails about the projector due to his ignorantly inadequate listing than he'll get from a couple of us here. Since the OP posted, a couple of us have actually emailed the seller with legitimate questions, and the seller has responded with worthless information, by not answering the questions at all, or worse by unnecessarily attacking the inquirer.
I find it interesting that some of you are so quick to point out what you see as "harassment" by us - guys joking around in a forum - while at the same time, you've had no comment whatsoever on the particularly offensive response I got back from a guy. WTF?
Another thing completely lost on some of you is that while we may have been having a laugh at "caps" boy's expense, when I wrote him, I did have an altruistic intention. I thought by mentioning it, maybe he would get the idea that he should put some effort into making his listings more readable. Even when people make fun of me, I can often find some educational value in it (for better or worse). Any altruistic intentions I had though went promptly out the window when I got his response... Which some of you don't even seem to have an opinion on. That surprises me around here, since most of us have an opinion (and are willing to give it) on damn near everything.

I do think he was WAY out of line for his response to you.
I was simply pointing out how Kal was encouraging emails and then later agreeing 100% with the fact that it was harassment. Joking or not he WAS encouraging people to send emails,then to later condemn them for harassment is lame. Obama's political annalist must have told him he needed to change his position.

If people were only TALKING about sending him snippy and provoking emails, fine. If several people did it, I'd say it falls under the "to annoy persistently" definition pretty quickly.
Yes SC, it sounds like he responded to you totally inappropriately. I'm guessing he had already been "annoyed persistently" about his caps key by a bunch of people, and when you included a comment about caps he figured you were just another ******* yanking his chain. (Which, well, you sorta were, right??  ) Which provoked a very irate and very rude response entirely inappropriate to your honest and mostly well-intentioned question. Which I agree was way out of line.
Somebody selling something on ebay ought to have thick enough skin to handle a few annoying emails without blowing up on someone asking him questions. No argument.
AND I'd like to think we're mature enough that we don't get our jollies from gang-emailing some schmuck who doesn't meet our definition of netiquette.

This the problem I have kal does a great job on this forum and now you want to start throwing stones at him because he has agreed with somebody. He has a right to his opinion however right or wrong it may be. this is turning into a witch hunt because one guy said that we were harassing someone, thats also his opinion. To send an e-mail to someone asking them questions is everybody's right. None of us were rude or did we ask to be insulted by the guy. We have voiced our thoughts on a forum and now the Morality Squad is out in force and gaining members!!!
