Make sure you decouple those fans from the wooden box or it will act like an amplifier, use some accoustic foam , also maybe line the box with the same foam. You can also get some accoustic liner vinyl to line the entire box and seal edges with green glue. that will make it totally silent. looks nice so far.

Fans are already decoupled Mr. Green

I'm thinkin about using an ATX powers supply with according adapters.

More soon if hardware for that arrives and front is ready........

What is the difference electronically between the 1209s and the Cine9?

The biggest differences are listed in the Barco Cine9 / 909 section of the products page here: http://www.curtpalme.com/CRTforSale_HighPerformance.shtm

They are:

3200x2560 resolution
180Mhz bandwidth (instead of 120)
180Khz max scanrate (instead of 120)
9" tubes with advanced 6-pole beam correction (instead of 4 pole)
81 zones of convergence (instead of 25)

Hi,

the real biggest differences:

1209s = analog Noise
909 = digital Noise

Shocked

81 zones and 6 magnets per tube...... 522 things to get adjusted correctly.... along with everything else... Shocked
I'm sure the picture quality is absolutely amazing.

I was hoping there might be some way to upgrade mine, but Curt said they are totally different machines. Sad

I think the Runco 1100 were DATA 1209s units, IF that is the case then the upgrade path is to GRAPHICS 1209s versions.

That is more useful for 1080p HD use, The data is running on its limits.........

"81 zones and 6 magnets per tube...... 522 things to get adjusted correctly.... along with everything else..."

I have been working with one of these amazing beasties for the last week or so
and the extent of adjustments is simply staggering - this could take a while to set-up!

There's the 24 'digital focus' zones, along with the usual center, top and bottom focus.
And the Astig has twentyfive zones, each with two axis each of 4-pole and 6-pole.
And then the 25 zones of Coarse Convergence, and 81 zones of Fine Convergence.
And 9 horizontal zones of side geometry tweaking - hard to describe, never seen anything like it.
Lots of nice menu improvements like putting the top/bottom key and bow together.
And then there's the mysterious "option one" in the service menu - something to do with
subspace harmonics I suppose....hohoho!

But there are still the usual 2 and 4 pole cpc magnets that we are all used to.
And the Vertical Shift and Size for Red and Blue are still handled by pots on the V board.

Fans are quiet on this model, although they crank up a bit when you get up to 1080P@72Hz.
Just to see how it would handle it, I ran up to 1200x1600 at 100Hz (127KHz scanrate)
and it was totally steady and sharp...

Hopefully on to some setup and colorimetry in the next few days - what fun!

Cheers,
Galen

Stop it Galen, now I'm itching for 2 of these to blend with Confused

Suprised though that it remains totally sharp at 1600x1200@100, when MP says his 909 can't do 1080p72 all that well.

Hi Gino,

As I understand it - Mike is talking about the ability of the video chain to
turn fully on/off in a 1 'pixel' timeframe. That is his very demanding way
of looking at bandwidth. And thank goodness for his approach...!

However, the later model 9" Barco's can scan at very high rates and
still have very sharp focus and very good sync and geometry. The 909
chassis definitely takes that to a crazy high level. If I can get some help we
may move it into the theater and do a nice setup and see how it looks...

Cheers,
Galen

That is a very good description Gale gives of the qualities of the 909.
The íncreased focus & astig controls combined with the insane sharp HFQ900 lens is unsurpassed in CRT-land. There is almost no difference anymore between center focus and edge focus. If you can see what the dots in the corner of a 3m wide screen look like, you won't believe it.

Adjusting a 909 is actually a very nice thing to do. I dare to say it takes less effort to get the overall sharpness of the electron beam/spot-size to the same level as a 1209s can do at its best. And then you can go beyond that. Adjusting dynamic six-pole astig on corner dots is just insane! You can clearly see the change with every push of the button on the remote.
The clarity of the image in corners has to be seen to be believed!

Downside of the 909 is it can suffer from (bad) video noise. It is not any better compared to the BG1209s in this respect, it may even be a little worse sometimes.

What is the result of all this in your hometheater?
Ok, down to earth we go. When watching the image from the seating position you won't be able to tell if you are looking at a 909 or a BG1209s. Corner sharpness is a bit better, but how important is that in movies?

Hi,

i think the Noise in a 909 is not Video Noise.
You can test!
Disconnect the power supply to the board for the digital Convergenz, and that noise is disappeared.
