Sorry guys, but the fireworks on Canada Day hold no candle (hey, there's a pun there somewhere) to what goes on the US on Friday.
Unfortunately I have a concert to go to on Friday night or I'd be South partying it up.

My state is so f-ed up! It's legal to BUY fireworks and transport them, but it's illegal to use them. WTF is that!?! Anything that leaves the ground is illegal. Sparklers and snakes are the only legal 'fireworks'.
Morons! How many Ooooohs! and Ahhhhhs can you get out of a sparkler or snake???? NONE! I guess our elected officials in Madison are easily impressed.
And...Happy Canada Day! Tip a brew or two for me.

In Denver the only legal "fireworks" are those little "throw it on the sidewalk and it goes 'pop'" thingies. NOTHING else.
In Ft. Collins, where I live, anything that doesn't leave the ground and/or explode is OK.
Doesn't stop my neighbor from going 40mi into Wyoming to buy an arsenal every year, though...

Wow... you are a bunch of nerds!
Watch 'Pops goes the Fourth!' in Boston. Second best time I ever had in one of my boats was tied up right behind the Hatch shell, about 50' from the howitzers. First boat in line, INSIDE the police and press line. Damn press kept calling over to me for an interview
Can't get that close anymore, not since 9/11.
Trivia for ya: Most people think the big Boston party has been going on since we evicted the brits (even many bostonians!) Its' actually privately funded and has been going on only since the 70's.

I'm angry, depressed, and ashamed every time I read words like that. (Not because of you, HJ, but because what you said is true.)

Any time I have a conversation with my wife about money is like the 4th of July

Too true.
Its' good to know SOME traditions are able to survive... a nearby town has a serious bon fire (when I say 'serious' read "alert the FAA" ) which went off recently.
My town got all stuffy... when I was a kid it was private bonfires on the beaches (tide dependent of course) with different neighborhoods competing for theme, size, etc. Not so much, anymore.

I'm glad you had a good time. However, that is not what I was hinting though. Any time the house budget is in question, sparks fly and it's not exactly the same thing as I think you are describing
