These things are on ebay frequently. Do they work the same as the ST-PC?
Peace,
Joel

They are the older cousin of the ST-CP. I would go with a ST-CP, newer X series (cnmsx, etc) or a 2 series (CP2, MP2e). But the older ones are good to learn on.

While the ST-CP is good to learn on, you can't do a lot of "heavy lifting" due to the fact it can not run SIMPL+ modules. At a minimum, try to grab an AV or Pro processor. If you want to get a more modern processor, see if you can find an AV/2 or a CP2 (the CP2E has an ethernet connection).

I am new to this forum and hope to be able to learn alot from all the members experience with all the technologies that are out there. I am an ET that has been doing my own automation with several technologies since 1988. My home is totally automated from lighting, water heating, A/c control , thermostat control , video security and finally A/V control. I have utilized many products over the years to accomplish this but the one problem I have always experienced was the remote control usability factor when it came to female operation, that is why I recently purchased a Crestron st-1700C. The problem I have now is that the individual I purchased the unit from did not provide the software in the Crestron box when I received it . I had no idea that this would not be included! I hope that there is someone in this forum that may be able to help me. Thanks

The ST-1700C is only one part of the system; you will also need a processor to i/f with it. Also, software to program a Crestron system is only available to authorized Crestron dealers and CAIPs.

Thank you JKV for your reply. I should have included the fact that I also purchased the MC2W along with the ST-1700C. I was hoping that someone could help me as I am way down in the Florida Keys and don't have access to someone who can help me with my dilemma in the area. I am willing to compensate anyone to help with this situation. Thanks

The thing with Crestron, AMX and other similar units is that there's a full training course that needs to be taken, although some computer savvy people can work through it on their own. Crestron et al protect their dealers by not making it super easy for the end user to program these units, so while you can find them cheap on eBay and such, you need a qualified Crestron guy to set the system up. From past experience, they don't come cheap.
I know one local company put in a full Crestron touch panel system for a pub's 20 TVS and sound system. ONe day one TV crapped out, they bought a different brand, so of course the IR commands were different, and the installer wanted $800 to reprogram the system for one TV. THe pub flipped out, and called all over the place looking for an alternate programmer, but nothing doing, they were stuck with the original guy.
The Crestron rep at the time was a buddy of mine, and explained that yes, Crestron protected their dealers that way, and in light that the whole system was in excess of $10K, $800 wasn't far off for a reprogramming charge, even if it was only one TV that needed changing.

To Curt Palme. I appreciate the concern about the closed access to the Crestron proprietory software. My problem is that the nearest dealer is 135 miles away. I am not looking to compete with the dealer or programmer. In the Florida Keys there are very few individuals that are even interested in this technology. The people who move here are people that are trying to get away from the constant berage of tech. All they want to do mainly is drink and fish. My interest is to upgrade my own home tech so that my wife and company can have ease of use. The Crestron software that I have seen in pictures on this web site look a lot like the HAI OMNIPRO " LADDER LOGIC " software that I have been using for the past 10 years. That software is also developed to hinder the general layman from use without some guidance. As a T.V. tech I also know about how it feels to watch your industry go silently into that great goodnight. But the fact remains, the products that Crestron has for residential use will slowly and surely be taken over by the younger generation of over the counter offshoots that are cheaper and as powerfull or more powerfull than they. That is simply the evolution of certainty. My only desire is to make my life a little bit easier so that I don't have to hear for the umpteen millionth time " how frustating it is to turn on the T.V. My concern is also about support. I have always managed ,no matter what system, to solve any problem with any of my equipment and that is why I would appreciate the help from anyone that can supply the software. Thanks again
