Okay, I have a Sony 1272Q - for the longest time, I've been using a DVDO iSCANpro to upres NTSC to RGB for the projector.
It's not fabulous - and I want to move up now and take advantage of my projector more.
I am buying the new Universal HDMI 1.3 from Moome, and to feed that I want to:
* Run at 720P
* Upscale NTSC to HDMI at 1080, vertically squeezed - (i.e. the 4x3 image not cropped, and not pillar boxed) I will unsqueeze with a projector setting.
* An ATSC tuner to HDMI at true 720 or 1080
* A DVD source that upscales to HDMI 1080
* A Blu-Ray player.
And I'd like to combine as many of these things into one unit as I can.
I.e., ideally, I'd have an ATSC tuner in a DVD Recorder that upscales from the Svideo input on back, upscales, DVDs, Plays the ATSC signal through at full resolution, and can also switch the output of the BluRay player through it.
From what I can see, no such beast exists yet - it seems the Panasonic DVD recorders with ATSC and upscaling, actually DOWN scale the ATSC, the re-upscale it - I don't want that.
But you get the idea - I'm sure this is a common desired configuration - are the components out there yet? I'm not finding them.
Best
Andy

Why do you want 720p, 1080i would be much easier to do in your situation and you wouldn't be downscaling Blue-ray and OTA HDTV
If you are dead set on 720p you will need a Scaler while if you go 1080i you may only need a HDMI switch.

Okay, 1080i or 1080P are fine too - I suppose I should have said a minimum of 720P.
I don't see how I won't need a scaler to upres NTSC from my Tivo/Dish Network (I cannot see the HD sat from where I am).
I may just end up going to HD cable, but in the meantime, and do to the kind of work I do, I need an NTSC to HDMI (720P or better) scaler.
Thanks for the comments

HDMI converter and an HDMI switch. That's all you need. Set all the sources to 1080i and you're done.

An HDMI converter will include upscaling NTSC to 1080i? Is there a specific brand/model that is recommended and reasonable?

No. None of the HDMI converters have scalers built in. That would be extremely complex and greatly increase the price. Why include it when 99% of people do not need it.
The only reason to use an HDMI converter is when you have newer HDMI sources that are HD anyway (like satellite or cable HD or Blu-ray). I can't think of a situation where a device would only have 480i output but HDMI would be used.
Which setup to choose depends on your needs. I suggest you read the information on each and decide for yourself based on the features you need.

As I mentioned in my original post, I am already buying the Moome Universal HDMI 1.3 to RGB.
What I need now is a way to upscale my NTSC sources like my Tivo to at least 720P over HDMI.
So:
* I need to find a decent upscaler.
* I'll get a standalone ATSC tuner
* I'll get a BluRay, since that will upscale my DVDs
* I'll get an HDMI switcher
BUT:
Is there a DVD recorder with a built in ATSC tuner, that outputs the ATSC over HDMI at FULL resolution, AND upscales an Svideo input and the DVD? So I can watch upscaled NTSC through the DVD recorder, etc etc.
That is really what I want. That kills alot of birds with one stone. Then I don't need an HDMI switcher until I get a Bluray.
The 2007 Panasonic DVD recorders with ATSC tuners will upscale, but the ATSC signal is downscaled then re-upscaled resulting in a significant loss in quality.
Or here's an example:

The SONY GXD455. It would be perfect - EXCEPT that it only outputs ATSC at standard definition (!!!) It is so annoying - when is there going to be one of these where the ATSC passes through at full resolution ?!?

At the risk of getting flamed, a VP30 will do exactly what you want. You can pass through your 1080i, and scale your 480i sources - with one box.

Why would you get flamed and what is a VP30?

The idea is I need:
1) an ATSC tuner with HDMI out
2) something to scale NTSC up and send it out HDMI
3) Possibly a switch to get these to the Moome universal 1.3 HDMI to RGB thingy
