Hey all.
Hoping you can help me diagnose my little problem. When switched on the projector fires up fine when no source is connected but when a source is connected it powers down the tubes there is an audible click from the front and the h.fail led is lit on the back of the machine.
Before it was this terminal, it all played fine until during playback of a dvd the horizontal geometry stuttered and the convergence needed to be constantly redone. The only other minor thing that might help diagnose it, is that the red tube was always slightly out of focus no matter how much adjustment I did to it.
I tried cleaning the contacts and re-installing the hvps which worked for about 5 mins then went out again.
Odd thing is that a little fiddling with the seated angle of the hvps sometimes snaps the projector back into life but not for long it seems.
I don't know how to identify most components yet, so if you say do this or that please tell me or show me with a pic, what I'm actually looking for.
Where do I start?

Sounds like a bad solder joint to me.

It sounds like a bad HDM or CLM, not a bad HVPS.

Hello
Try this. Turn your sources off, then go to the Internal Frequencies, push UTIL, 1, 6, 1, if you see the grid make note of it. Try 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and report back which if any selections give you a grid or not.

Alright Tim, the following occurs.
on
Horiz Vert
1. 15.73 59.94 there is a stable grid that is slightly off in colour convergence
2. 31.47 59.94 goes black and gives h.fail led on the back of projector
3. 47.71 71.90 goes black and gives h.fail led on the back of projector
4. 62.50 66.67 gives grid but occasional horizontal geometry twitching
5. 89.30 70.00 gives grid but constant horizontal geometry twitching
6. 126.84 60.00 gives grid with wild horizontal geometry twitching and jagged vertical lines during the twitch as well as some line twitching from the horizontal lines. Did go black for a 5 or 6 seconds and then switch back on. Then repeat at approx same time intervals.
Is it the HVPS or the HDM and CLM and how do I identify them, repair them, get circuit diagrams for them?
Solder I can do. Cleaning contacts I can do. Multimeter and solder station and evil grin, I do have.
I get what the table represents but what do the failures mean?

I found the HDM, cleaned the connections and reseated it with weird results.
The util test changed.
1 still stable but 2 has mild horizontal geometry twitching and 3 has wild twitching then 4 5 and 6 don't come on at all.
Is it and adjustment or the trim pots that need looking at on the HDM?
Tried cleaning and reseating the clm when I found it as well. Now the util test gives the results
1 stable grid
2 twitching horizontal geometry
3 no display
4 twitching horizontal geometry
5 no display
6 twitching horizontal geometry
What do I do from here?

it seems to me like you have loose connections all over the place I would reseat all boards in the projector as well as pull out the clm and place it on a flat surface and push on all of the chips in the sockets they have a tendancy to vibrate loose

It could be the H-drive signal from the DPB that is one of the smaller boards on the CLM. Remove the CLM and then the DPB and clean the connector pins on the DPB and press down on the all removeable chips on the CLM and the DPB. then see what happens, The H-drive signal is from the DPB and goes to the HDM and helps control the HDM, I weak or intermitten signal could cause this.

cleaned reseated and pressed all chips on the clm and boards on it.
No change at all.
There were a couple fractionally loose but still no change to behavior.
I have tried the same thing on the hdm for the hdm removable chips and I have tried reseating the board. Each time I reseat the board hdm board I get slightly different results but similar results with half of the frequency sets not showing a grid or anything else for that matter. Only which ones seems to change. 1 always works but the rest are a mixed bag.
Does this have something to do with the 6 trimpots on the hdm board?

No it does not. At this point...STOP. You stand a good chance of creating more problems that you are solving the problem. Send in the HDM and CLM for repair/testing. THis sounds like a component issue now, not a connection one.
