Wouldn't a medicracy be rule by the mediocre? But if it's ruling, by definition it's not mediocre. This would result in a governmental race condition which would result in an infinitely fast oscillation between a mediocracy and a bizarrocracy. This would not converge, but rather emerge as a kind of probability field - for instance, if you were to turn on the TV and watch a speech by the president, there would be a 50% chance of him being completely normal and a 50% chance of him being totally weird.

Therefore, Nashou, I concur - this scenario is best avoided.

I think it is all about compromise, if you have only a small house or apartment where the lounge doubles as a room for your projector it can make it difficult for your wife to accept. I was fortunate to have built a new house with 12 rooms with a total floor area of 330sq metres which leaves spare rooms for other purposes. On the plans one room was described as a "theatre room" so that is what it ended up being. My wife has here sewing room so she cannot complain.

I seriously hope all this macho posturing is in jest... if your relationship is us-vs-them, it's time to reevaluate the relationship or your attitude toward it. This business of 'guys rooms vs girls room's is kind of childish. It shouldn't be about man or woman, it's about who does what, and how important it is to you. It has nothing to do with what sex you are! Ergh.

Amen. Ever take a shower or bath in a cast iron tub, with a wife and or girlfriend(s)? If it can hold 2+ people, water, and a tub; you'll have no problem with 4 blended and stacked marquees.

If she can't be convinced it is safe, talk with a builder/home inspector/architect to have them verify if it is safe. It may cost you a hundred or so, but you'll spend more for a new projector before taking a loss on your current one.

I'm not an architect, so take this next remodeling idea with a grain of salt, or feel free to thrash it if you are:

Longer unistruts spread the weight to more joists for more strength.

Demo your front and back wall, count yourself lucky if they don't exist. To so save money and time digging through warped 2x4s at lowes/home depot, try and recycle the 2 x 4s since you know they are straight.

Make the unistruts as long as the room, size permitting, long enough to be supported by the front and back wall; and anchoring them in every joist.

Then take a 2 x 4/4 x 4(I think a unistrut is about the width of a 2 x 4), plane it to the same thickness if needed, attach it to the back wall and wall where your screen will go, with breaks for the unistruts and attach the struts. If its close, shims are fine.

Attach the wall's top plate your unistruts and the 2x4s run along the joist.

You now have 2 walls holding it from the bottom, joists from the top, and an instant channel to run cable. You could even run notched joists underneath from the side walls for more strength.

It's all overkill, but if your wife has the concern, future buyers may too.

I wouldn't want to do that. Never heard of anyone doing that. Can't imagine why anyone would do that.

It's a nice idea but I think that may be over board.

To the op.

Your wife is worried about 2 pj. but.....

The average tub holds 58 gallons of water. @ 3/4 full thats 43.5 gallons. Water weighs about 8.6 pounds per gallon.

the tub itself is about 75 lbs. plus 43.5* 8.6 comes to 449.1 pounds BEFORE you get in the tub..... has she ever given that a second thought? A whirlpool tub. Weighs 160 lbs. Holds 115 gallons 3/4 full 86.25 gallons. 160 plus 86.25*8.6 comes to a whopping 901.75 pounds without a person in it.... Shocked

A baby grand piano "only" weighs 540 pounds... http://www.steinway.com/steinway/specs/model_s.shtml

Make sure you are bolted into the joists. Hang those babies and enjoy! Thumbs Up

If it justified me keeping my PJ, I would. It's how a lot of remodel jobs get around pipe work that can't be relocated. Only difference is the wall bears no weight of the pipe.

Like I said, its definitely overkill. 2 x 4s can hold 3,000lbs per square inch, and a floor joist could probably do significantly more. I see no need, but I'm not trying to talk my wife into it. But with the same respect, you won't be weakening your housing structure.

Chances are, they're going to be resting ontop of concrete, cinderblock, or steel beam if it is a basement or the framed up exterior walls if it is a first floor. Which is normal and perfectly fine. You may want to cut a small hole where the ceiling meets the walls to be certain it is constructed properly.

I was at a house that had a Sony 1272 hanging from the ceiling for the last 8 years or so. His wife was concerned about the PJ falling down. He humoured her and added 2 safety chains on diagonal opposite corners. Un necessary but it kept the peace.

I'd be more interested in keeping the piece, but I think we're still thinking along the same lines. Mr. Green

She had her doubts about giving up our living room for our CRT home theater (no basement, damn it), but right away she got into it. My wife insisted that we floor mount the CRT PJ and I agree with her. I actually did ceiling mount the one in the computer room, and really came to hate tweaking upside down and backward over my head.

We went to an electronics store to look at 50+ inch plasma flat screens for the den. Her comment: "Nope - too small". The look on the salesman's face was priceless!

After 7 CRT projectors (I kept the last two Marquees), I bought her her own digital PJ. She wants it mounted in the hall closet, shooting through a hole in the den wall at a custom screen over the mantle, and a motorized picture to cover the hole in the wall that will automatically raise and lower with the remote, so she can watch a big screen from the kitchen.

So what do I say to her? YES DEAR.
