Just 2-pole I'm afraid.

Had a bash at the magnets today, tried Athanasios' idea of just doing it by taking off the lens' and looking at the tube face itself. I haven't put the lens' back on yet to see what it looks like onscreen but certainly looks better than what I had before and I'm happy with the result - a decent start at long last! Had to stop after an hour or so, headache again.

Probably revisit this next weekend (busy week ahead) and put the tubes on and see what its like. I'm not kidding myself, it probably won't be particularly good but its better than I had previously, one step at a time.....!

Thumbs Up

Getting there! I find it a lot easier to do with the lenses off I must admit.

If it were not for some movement whilst ramping focus up and down I'd probably be happy with things the way they are and start on something else but I'll keep going until I eradicate the movement.

Get a blinding headache if I spend too much time on the magnets, can't do more than an hour so at a time now but visible progress is being made Thumbs Up

If there's a little movement, don't sweat it. *PERFECT* magnetics means you won't have any movement, but if it's only moving slightly, that's good enough for now. You'll keep tweaking with it over time and you'll get better at it.

I've never tried doing the magnetics with lenses off. I would think it would be hard to see the details. With projectors that do the magnetic adjustments via remote, it's really nice to walk right up to the screen while you do the adjustments. You can do that on the Marquee for the astig, zone focus, etc. For the flare rings you have to be back at the projector, but with the crosshatch patterns I can see it real easily from there.

I agree with Gary, as I have movement too but nice round dots. Gary the benifit of doing it with no lens' is that you dont have to try to do it when you have a bad mechanical lens focus, Also this helps in doing the lens focusing because now you know if there is a focus problem its not due to tube face focus but lens focus. This also helps see the difference between lens'.

Magnetic ring adjustments apply only to the center. It's dead easy to get the center focused sharp. You can worry about edge focus, flapping, zone astic, zone focus, etc. afterward.

Well, I finally resolved this once and for all - I got a set of FrankenYokes! What a difference, astig is pretty much spot on without having to actually do anything, focus is superb! Night and day difference, way better than I thought they would be. No way I could have got them this good, even in my wildest dreams.

Well worth the cost, well worth it indeed! I'm bankrupt but I'm happy!

So it might have been a bad focus coil giving you trouble Paul.

Paul I'd also like you to take pics of how you wired them up to the harness that goes to the FCM and SAB. I have a two sets and need to hook them up after i do all the mods.

Could have been a bad coil on the blue right enough, the difference is most noticable there. Red and Green were good once I'd finally got to grips with them though. Nothing compared to the Frankenyokes though, have to say, Frankenyokes takes all the hassle out and then some, sharp, sharp, sharp! An absolute joy!

Mines came pre-wired from Fireanimal (Andy). All I can see is the same wires coming out of the yokes as you would see coming out of the normal yokes.

I think its easy enough to open them up sufficiently to see what wire is attached to what connector so I'll do that probably Wednesday (will be home late Mon & Tues) and post the piccies here - off to bed shortly, been Cat6'ing the house all day to stream broadband and HDMI all over the place but in particular into the same room as the marquee.

Just pull apart the yoke after removing the plastic ties that hold it together (original screws would have been removed to accomplish making the Frankenyoke)? Anything to watch out for in taking one apart?

Paul I think I have pics of a dismantled KD yoke form a barco on the franken yoke thread, its exactly the same just different winding values. the wires connect to a small PCB and the wires are very delicate , so be carefull. If its just curiosity then dont do it , dont want to have ot try to fix those things its a pain to get it back together.

Without a shadow of a doubt!

Also, may I take the oppurtunity to give a well-deserved public "thank you" to Andy for his excellent arrangement of the shipping for the Frankenyokes and the fantastic communications - above and beyond my friend, above and beyond Thumbs Up

Right, back to these magnets Shocked !

At about 60 global Focus I see blobs with the bright cores. I can get them perfectly round and with the cores dead centre.

BUT when I ramp global Focus up to 90 or so, the blobs change shape and look like a tiny little / (slash).

Now, do I need to keep adjusting this until the blobs stay round at say 90 Focus, or, should I not worry about it as I'll never have global Focus up that high anyway?

The grid still moves when ramping up the focus - I'm ignoring that at the moment in my attempt to get perfect blobs BUT is it the grid moving thats causing the blobs to change shape? I think yes but thought I'd ask.

BTW, a bit OT, I had my first bad Marquee focus magnet the other day. It was all the way up to the main yoke, focus set to 0, and I still got horrible focus. Replaced the yoke, and then focus was best at 25.

I have a feeling the yoke magnet structure is cracked, I haven't opened it yet to check though.

Back On topic, your astig magnets are still off. THe grid should not move when adjusting focus, the dots should stay round.

Someone bought my last set of 6 pole magnets to correct some LUG astig problems that he could not get right with the 4 pole magnets. It was Craig from CIR Engineering, who knows his way around CRTs and the setup thereof.

Ah-ha! Ok, thanks Curt, that makes sense. I'm understanding this procedure better now and knowing where I'm going wrong is 99% of the answer!

I'm at home for a few days and the magnets and final install of the Marquee is my sole priority. Plenty of time to try and get these bloody magnets sufficiently well done to allow me to move on and start watching movies, at least for a while anyway.
