I want to expand the storage on my Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HDDVR. I know it can be done by insatlling a bigger drive in the box, (which the cable company would not be happy about) but does anyone know if this external drive will work if I just plug it into the SATA connector on the back of the box?

I was under the impression you could use an external drive. I do not remember if it was USB or eSATA based though as I would be confusing it with the D* HR units.

Why not go D-VHS, then you can keep it as long as you want without ever worrying about space and record over it when you don't want it anymore?

D-VHS? Tape.... I think I want to stay away from magnetic tape for storage. What I would like to do is record to the external drive and then burn dvd's from that on my pc. I think it's legal as long as I'm only using it for personal archiving.

Everything that is good should be 5C encrypted, thus you can't move it to the PC and burn it. If your provider has not yet locked it down, they will get around to it as they will be made to soon. Once locked down, you will have two options:
1) Hard drive tied to the device and not usable anywhere else, or
2) D-VHS
You better make sure you can capture stuff from it. If there is a hack like with the TiVo, it is usually a big PITA. To me, the time is not worth it, but might be to you. 
Some day, someone will have to explain to me why magnetic storage is OK if it round and spins but bad when it is long flat strips.

The only thing I don't like about tape is the size of the library.
Thanks to Bruce I have found out that the external drive I want to use works without any problems. It costs $200. and when I'm done using it with the dvr I can use it on something else. Someone will figure out a way soon to transfer from the external drive to a burner. I'm guessing that the terabyte of storage will last a while, I'm not going to store anything that can be rented or bought at a later date, only stuff that is unlikely to be aired again. (interviews, documentaries)

Perhaps, but note that 5C encryption is to this day unhacked.

I got the Cavalry 1 Terabyte drive today. Newegg is the best! One day shipping and a super price! Brought it home, plugged it into the cable box, fired it up and it was instantly recognized. The box asked to format it, I pushed one button, and it was done in less than a minute. Pushed the power button on the cable box to power down and back up and it was done. Didn't even have to unplug the box. Instantly increased my dvr capacity to 150hrs of HIGH DEF. SD should be three times that. Best $200.00 I ever spent... except for what I spent on my divorce lawyer. It does have a VERY bright blue light though, brighter than the HD-A2. I think some black electrical tape will fix that. Nix the black tape, I took the little plastic stand that came with it and clipped it over the light. Done deal. I'm happy.
