I believe so. I have a link at home. Unfortunately I am in the North and won't be home til Friday night. If it is a CABLE set top box, it must have an active firewire port. I don't know how the Sat. guys avoided this.
O.K. Here it is
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/part76.pdf
Section 76.640, subsection 4i
" Effective April 1, 2004, upon request of a customer, replace any leased high definition set-top box, which does not include a functional IEEE 1394 interface, with one that includes a functional IEEE 1394 interface or upgrade the customer's set-top box by download or other means to ensure that the IEEE 1394 interface is functional."

So... What happens if they do a download and I get hit with some version of the software that doesn't work as well as the version of Sara that is on it? I have read stories about boxes getting 'gatored and losing functionality. I'd like to find out how to enable the 1394 port by myself.

Good luck with that. Unless the box has ethernet and runs telnet or includes some other means by which you can modify the software on the box from the outside, and unless somebody's already done the work of hacking the kernel and services that control the firewire port (or you're an experienced developer/hacker yourself), you're up the creek.
Take your model number and google it along with hack, mod, etc. and see what comes up. If somebody hasn't already done the work, you won't be doing it either. These things are basically computers with complicated operating systems.

I would just bitch to my provider and cite the law. If that didn't work, I would have my neighbors bitch. If that didn't work, I would squeal on them.
