|
|
Helppppp!!
I have an RCA Proscan 80" with 9" crt's that has gone on the blink and no one seems to be able to fix it. I have had it to two different RCA repair centers over the last year with no results. I use this for regular tv and rest my Barco 1200 graphics for HD movies. Although this is a non HD set it did have a line tripler built in and threw a respectable picture for a non HD tv. Any one have any ideas where I can get help on this? Curt?
Thanks so much!
Randy

Sorry, I've never even seen this set, let alone work on one. It's a sad state of affairs when RCA repair depots can't repair it. Buncha rookie techs! Maybe call RCA headquarters and bitch?
Also, if it helps, on most of these RP sets, the 'light box' (chassis) can be pulled out of the cabinet for servicing just in case you've been lugging that monster around..

It's a RCA MODEL PS80690. The entire light box is removable and can be carried by two menand an ox. Total unit is about 6' x 6' x 4' . Light box shows 9" crts with Delta 120's on top. RCA is no more. Thompson sold the name to a Chinese company and does not ship products to the states or support their older product. Attached is a pic of the monster.

Damnnnnnn, RCA went all out!
Check what the tube numbers on the set, I'll bet they are Panasonic or Sony tubes. Should be P19 LCP or??

I still have to pick up the light box from the last Technical challenger it beat. Want me to ship it out to you?

Oh, THAT makes more sense. What about taking those lenses and dropping them onto one of the BG808 retros that I have? Take a pix of those Delta lenses and the light box. I could probably repair it, but not sure if it's worth it due to the shipping costs..

I would, but I already have a Barco BG1200 and my next move needs to be to a BG1209S, 9500LC or G90. Just have the problem with champaign tastes and beer pocketbook. I use this big boy to watch regular TV Discovery channel, History channel etc. and save the BG1200 hours for HD Movies. My guess is that RCA didn't really build these units themselves. Their sales of these were way too low. I would guess someone else built it and stuffed an RCA Proscan tag on it.

It's a RCA / Proscan MODEL PS80690. CTC188AE chassis. The unit tries to turn on and immediately shuts down on protection. P" CRT's with Delta 109's.

I know they checked out the power supply as these had cap problems. Checked out the solder joints on the RF tuner coax to the mother board (supposedly caused floating ground problems which whipped out IC's) and I believe the first technician replaced the flyback.

Not finding my manual on that chassis. Everything else but. Anyways, the 188 chassis had a problem with the power supply and the splitter. Eeprom's too, but it probably wouldn't turn on at, just dead set. Try disconnecting the high voltage wire from the flyback and see if it powers up. You sure it was the fly that was changed and not the splitter. Splitter is called the HV block in those units.

I lost interest way back in 1986/7 when RCA came out with the cheapest pieces of crap ever. Complicated, crapppy wave soldering and expensive parts. A lot of them way back when (your chassis is obviously much later) had bad HV transformers and bad solder joints.
More common nowadays are bad power supply chips and caps, based on what I read on the monthly specials I get from the TV parts supply places.
There are also a bunch of TV website resources online, but they charge to get access to them. They get model and part specific, and you subscribe to access them. Google the set and see what you come up with, that's helped me a few times when I was working on non CRT projector stuff.
