Hi All,

Two weeks ago I helped a friend install a moome VIM-HD card in his Marquee 9000. After the install I hooked up a hdmi source and adjusted everything via the menus and it all looked good.

Today I got back there and everything looks like crap. At first I thought it was source related, but even the convergence grids and internal patterns are crap. With the contrast set low, I pulled up a convergence grid and climbed a ladder to look into the tubes. The pattern was fully visible in the green tube. But both the red and blue tubes had no visible pattern in them except for the outer most edges!! There is light coming from them, but no discernible image.

Any ideas? Of course the guy that installed the unit four - five years ago can't be found. Tampa / St Petersburg by the way.

This is most likely a bad VIM or maybe a bad HVPS if the G2 output is low. REmember that the 9000 is now considered an 'old' set, but parts are plentiful.

If you want, send me the CLM, HVPS, VIM and 3 neck boards for checking or repair/replacement. It's not the tubes.

Thanks Curt. You just reminded me how over my head all of what you just said is. I will do a search to figure out what all of those items are but I am not sure if I am qualified to remove any of them unless they are easily asccessable boards/cards.

I read the marquee faq, thanks for the link. I didn't see in there how to get to the 3 neck boards, but I should be able to get to all the other items even though it is mounted on a ceiling.

Could this issue be caused by the moome card being istalled incorectly into the VIM?

if the internal patterns are bad, then I can't see if being the Moome card, but remove the Moome card and try it again.

The neck boards are under the metal back covers on each tube. There are pictures in that layout section.

I doubt the Moome card has anything to do with it, the neck boards come out with a little effort. it helps to get at them if you swing up the back heat sink if yours is that type. you need to remove the gold colored covers off of each tube end , those cover the neck boards, then there a few connections to be removed from the card and it slides right off the tube.

Curt will get you up and running in no time!

Don't get me wrong, I am not blaming the moome card. The timing of this issue is just a little coincidental to the installation of the card. In addition to finding out what is wrong, I am trying to deduce why and why now. Wink

Trying to figure out why will drive you nuts! last year i had my set professionally calibrated and before the calibrator left it started smoking really bad and we had to shut it off. something on the Horizontal deflection board fried. lucky i had a spare set and swaped out the board. he did a quick convergence and i have not had a problem since. Sometimes things just go bad. no reason more than just age.

Just thinking out loud but is it possible that this issue has developed because the projector is now auto switching between rates?

Input 01 is fed by a lumagen scaler (original vision) that is outputting 1080i for all sources. Input 02 (moome VIM-HD) via hdmi source was set to send the native rate of the broadcast. I am wondering if the marquee switching between rates caused some stress that it was not accustomed to thus ending in a board/ps failure.

I guess we'll figure it out.

I remember the early Moome vim cards had a few problems with frying something out on the 9000 series vims and some early build 85/9500 models as well .

I have forgotten most of the details on the fix , You will probably be able to to look it up in the AVS archives .

You would be better off getting a newer revision Vim and Hvps anyway instead of fixing yours.

The 9000 series neck boards, vim, and HVPS are the bottle necks in reliability /performance. I would really look at finding some replacement parts .

See if Curt has replacement parts rather than fixing the old ones.

When the Moome cards blew up the VIMS I'm pretty sure there was no picture at all. So while there could be a fault on the VIM, I don't think the Moome card caused it.

Well to update this thread:

Curt checked out the boards and they had no issues including the moome. (other than a low battery on the clm)

Best guess is that the blue and red guns have SEVERE fungus. Cell phone pictures attached(sorry for the quality):
